“Alpha!” One of the patrol guards emerged from the treeline, his face pale. “There’s something you need to see.” “What is it?” I asked, already moving toward him. He hesitated, his voice trembling. “It’s the northern border. There’s… there’s a message.” --- When I arrived at the border, the sight that greeted me sent a chill down my spine. Carved into the bark of a massive oak tree were words that glowed faintly with an unnatural light:

~ Lucas ~ I kept my eyes on the ground and walked toward the main hall. The first lesson of the day was called Border I guess, something about old maps and learning to recognize the scent of enemies near pack land. Inside, the room was darker and quieter. Thin windows let in strips of sunlight that fell across old wooden desks. The wood was scratched and carved with initials from students long gone. I chose a seat in the back corner. I set down my satchel carefully and took out my slate and a piece of charcoal. I moved slowly, trying not to make noise.

I stepped forward, my presence no longer hidden. “You always did have a sharp sense of the unseen,” I said gently. Alina turned her head slightly, just enough to glance at me. Her eyes were red-rimmed, lashes wet. “Was it that loud?” she asked, voice hoarse. “No,” I replied. “But it was deep. The forest doesn’t echo unless it needs to.” She laughed, bitter and soft. “Well. At least I’ve made myself memorable.” I knelt across from her, letting the creek separate us. The moonlight pooled between us, silver and soft, casting shadows on her face that made her look older than her years.

At the ruined palace, there were only the distant whimpers of Bond echoing across the horizon. The voice of Alpha Maeva echoed in her head. Arista turned, looking at the border in front of her, reciting from Alpha Maeva’s voice. In just a moment, the border of the Dead Land pack slowly opened. In the darkness, gradually shimmering light like stars, the light slowly condensed into a door just enough for one person to pass through. “Go, Arista.” Arista gritted her teeth, no longer turning back, stepped into the border of the Dead Land pack.

With Pixie safe, thanks to Ayla, I was able to focus on the wolves that filtered through my borders. Jared and WormWhick fought at my side, easily ridding my lands of the rogues. It had been too long since we'd fought together. My reputation as a crazed, bloodthirsty Alpha had kept most Alphas away. Even in the darkest parts of my depression, I had received almost no threats, and Ayla was usually the one keeping the border security tight. There hadn't been a breach like this since the one that separated him from Naomi. He hated that he was once again separated from his mate.

Not really an asset but more of a liability. A cluster of palm trees lined the riverbed, their leaves swinging and swaying as if going along with the song of the wind. Wild and free, its green color shone like jade in the light of the joyous sun above. As a child, I have climbed enough trees to not mind the height. Not that I planned to escape this pack, but … it was good to know. At least, I know what I might do should I ever be desperate enough to risk it. This garden and the Alpha’s residence is the one closest to the border. The said border is only marked by the lifelessness of dry grass ahead. Some say those lands belong to the Rogues. I wonder how many Omegas manage to step their foot

“Alright. Good luck, dearest!” The spell-circle glowed yellow, and several characters began to shift and rearrange themselves. They were moving rapidly, and I could only identify a few characters—‘power’, ‘balance’, ‘support’, ‘link’—because they kept repeating over and over. I realized that I was looking at the original coding of the Border System—a significant portion of it, anyway. The guys at the Bureau would kill for this. Or maybe they won’t have to, since I’m recording the entire thing and I’m obligated to hand it over anyway. A progress bar appeared in front of me.

I am startled from my daydream when my office door opens with a sweep. Hunter walks in. “Am I interrupting?” “Can’t you knock?” I ask him irritated he woke me up from my daydream. “Anyway, what is the reason for you startling in my office.” “Some wolves tried to go over the border this morning. The border patrol took some pictures. They were able to scare them off. Do you recognize any of them?” hunter throws a few pictures on my desk. I recognize them immediately. “They are alpha Jack’s wolves.” I look up at him. Hunter nods.

He takes her. "Are they okay?" Laura asks. "Yes," Bido answers her. Sammie flutters over to Laura. She kisses Laura's cheek. "You did wonderfully," Sammie says. Bido brings the little hybrid over to Laura, and the pack doctor hands me the little boy. "Our future Alpha and his beautiful sister," I say. "How do you know she won't be the Alpha?" Laura teases me. "You are right. She could be our future Alpha," I say to her.

The nearest pack members spare me a smile at that. "Right, hit me with your best shot" I say, opening my arms out. Alice frowns, reluctant. "Don't worry; I'll go easy on you. I don't care if it hurts, just attack me" "I can't" Alice drops her hands. I shake my head at her. "Then pretend I'm a rogue attacking the border" I offer. "I've never been on the border" "Goddess, you need to get out girl" I comment and she giggles. "Pretend I'm Austin" I say instead. I hear him make a protesting noise as Alice smiles.
