Ken struggled to steady his breathing, clutching his chest as the panic attack gripped him. His vision blurred, and he felt like he was suffocating. "It's okay, it's okay," he whispered to himself, rocking slightly on the spot, trying to calm down. He repeated the words like a mantra, but they did little to soothe him.

The memories of what he had done to me and my family came flooding back, and I could not stop the disgust from showing. I tried to keep my composure, but my hands were shaking so badly that I had to grip the edge of the table to steady myself. I could feel the sweat beading on my forehead, and my heart was racing so fast that I thought it might explode. I knew I had to get out of there before I got a panic attack, but I did not want to show any weakness before Calvin. I took a deep breath and tried to sound confident. "I think it is best if you leave now," I said, my voice shaking slightly. "I do not want anything to do with you."

I excused myself and went to the kitchen with some lame excuse, I didn't want them to notice my weird behavior. I dragged my feet to the sink, I opened the tap and put my shaking hands under the cold water. 'Everything is fine' I kept chanting to myself. Suddenly my heart started beating fast and loud as if it was ready to jump out of my ribcage at any moment now. My breathing was kind of rugged and my head was spinning. The shaking in my hands spread to my legs too. Something is wrong.

Bile rose and her hand shook so badly that she dropped the fork, the noisy clang startling in the silence. She knew her face had drained of blood. She was utterly paralyzed and she couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t force much-needed air into her lungs. Her chest constricted tighter and tighter and her throat followed suit until she was well into a full-blown anxiety attack. Perspiration beaded her forehead and upper lip. The desire to flee, to run as fast as she was able and to get as far away from this place as possible seized her. But she couldn’t make her legs obey. Couldn’t even manage the simple act of breathing, much less acting on her desire to get away.
