Daisy stared at her. For a moment she looked like she might say nothing. Then her lip trembled slightly. Very slightly. "I'm scared." Jessica felt her heart crack. Because suddenly Daisy didn't look twenty one anymore. Didn't look grown up. Didn't look like an adult. Suddenly she looked six. Standing in pyjamas with a stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her arm. Scared of thunderstorms. Scared of monsters. Scared of the dark. Only this wasn't thunder. Wasn't monsters.

I can’t go eat in front of them while they’re being starved. It’s dinner time, so most of the cooks are in the dining room serving food. I look around and spot a basket of apples in the corner. Without thinking twice, I walk toward it. My heart pounds like it’s trying to escape my chest. When I see none of the cooks looking, I grab a few apples, slip them into my tray, snap the lid shut, and rush out of the kitchen. “Watch it, Runt!” I jerk the tray up just in time to avoid slamming into Bryn and Kaecy.

"See that waterfall over there? Behind it there is a cave that will lead us through this mountain range. I've only been through it once before, but I'm pretty sure it's shorter than my usual way around using that stream over there. It ends up winding back the way we came, just more south." Jack paddled them over to the trickling waterfall. Alex caught the edge and pulled them closer. A spider as large as her hand crawled up the rock. Its thick furry legs pulled it up and its large fangs dripped with white saliva. Alex screamed and backed away, tripping on the front bench and landing in the middle of the boat. Jack leaned around to see what had spooked her. He flicked a fireball nonchalantly.

All they needed to do was look in the right direction of the woods. It's a miracle I had been able to hide this long, all thanks to Max.

The scary Alpha growled and glanced back at Jonathan. “Shut that damn mutt up,” he snarled, and I saw one of the men wrap his arm around Jonathan’s neck, just like I did when he carried me. Only Jonathan struggled this time and he suddenly looked scared as his face started to turn red. The scary Alpha moved in front of me as I heard a crack and I screamed and looked to see Jonathan staring at me with blank eyes. I jumped up to run to him but the scary Alpha grabbed me and started to carry me towards the entrance of the Hollow. I screamed and tried to fight out of his arms, but his grip only tightened.
