she trailed off, the words dying on her tongue before she could force them out.
“Sh, sh. It’s okay,” I soothed, my hand moving to rub slow circles on her back.
She flinched at first, but only slightly.
“I won’t hurt you.” My voice softened, turning almost lazy, like a snake whispering lullabies to its prey. “I like you, Bambi.”
The words rolled off my tongue smoothly, deliberate and measured. “And it’s getting out of my hands.”
She turned her head away sharply, like she couldn’t bear to hear it.
