My eyelashes fluttered repeatedly until my eyes opened. Almost immediately, they felt a throbbing pain which caused them to close shut. After a minute, I decided to try again. I slowly opened my eyes, giving them time to adjust to the insanely bright light that poked at them. The vast whiteness started to slowly clear up as I continued to blink. One muscle at a time, I started to regain control over my body. By the time I had gone around all six hundred of them, they simultaneously ached in the most painful way I had ever felt.

So, I stayed. Hour four was the hardest. The urge to blink became a form of torture. My eyes felt like they were filled with hot sand. I learned to "micro-blink"—closing one eye while keeping the other fixed on the glass, then switching. It was a rhythmic, exhausting dance.
