The floor of the hallway made a subtle cracking sound, like ice beginning to grow from within the stone. In the distance, the lights of the hanging torches slowly extinguished one by one, creating a layered darkness that moved closer. Valtorius grasped his wand. "He's awake..." "Who?" whispered Raven, her voice choked. "Something even the Last Watchers dare not mention. They call him... The Night Watcher."

My assistant also took advantage of the commotion to slip me a cup of warm water, signaling with her eyes for me to step out and get some air. I felt warmth spread through my heart. I pushed myself up too fast. Pain flared through my side, like sharp knives. It was enough to make me suck in a breath.

"The dark isn't so bad once you stop fighting the shadows. We're going to be a family again. Just like Grandmother promised." The last thing Panni saw before the darkness claimed her was Jinyan being dragged into the depths of the tunnel, his hand reaching out for her one last time before the light of his flashlight was crushed under a heavy boot.
