Chapter 38 Alex's POV In the realm between dreams and reality, Alex slowly emerged from the depths of unconsciousness. The gradual return of sensation began with a tingling awareness in his fingers, like tendrils of life creeping up his limbs. A dull ache resonated through his head, as if his mind were struggling to break free from the shackles of slumber. As he fought against the weight of darkness, the world around him remained shrouded in obscurity. His breath came out in short pants, anything more would make one of his broken ribs puncture his lungs. Turning into a wolf was sheer agony for him, but it didn't hold a candle to the unearthly pain he was feeling on every part of his body.

Elaine’s POV Waking up in the middle of the night felt like being jolted from a deep, peaceful slumber by an unseen force. My eyes snapped open, and a strange urgency coursed through my veins, compelling me to get up. It wasn’t a gradual awakening; it was immediate and commanding. As if possessed, I found myself rising from the bed without a conscious thought, my body moving on autopilot. The soft glow of moonlight filtered through the window, casting eerie shadows across the room.

I know I'm dreaming, but I can't seem to wake up. When I wake up, my throat is raw, and even though it felt like I was sleeping for hours, I was only asleep for less than forty minutes. I go to wash my face, and when I look into the mirror, I don't recognise the face staring back at me. I've not recognised her for a long time. I try to remember the last time I ate and come up blank, a girl with shoulder length silver hair, a too thin face and dull brown eyes surrounded by bruises caused by lack of sleep stare back at me. I remember a time when I was pretty. My hair was waistlength back then, framing a face with delicate features, and my eyes were full of life. Now, I am a shell of the person

“For now, I am an awakened part of you, Kaya. You have the power to utilize me however you like, but I will always be that light in your darkness. I shall be the one to remind your cold heart that it is still alive. A reminder of goodness, I shall remain. Until later.” Everything goes dark and blank for a second before I suck in air greatly as I awaken into reality. My head hurts, and my body feels numb for a minute or so, leaving me stagnant on the bed. Blinking profusely till I am able to grasp full control of myself, I wipe away the beads of sweat that have formed on my face. My palms are wet, and the bed is soaked with my sweat, too. Oops.

With a sigh, she lets the mysterious stranger with blue eyes vanish. The light purple walls of her room come into focus when she rolls onto her side. Sera is still reminiscing about her dream. It's so hard for her to wake up sometimes. Maybe she could sleep forever. She finds herself wishing she could live in the other world, the one her subconscious has created. She's still contemplating this when her alarm clock blares to life behind her. Sighing to herself, she rolls over and out of beed to begin the routine that is her daily life.

The sides of her lips twirled in a smile. Suddenly, I felt my body getting lighter—f*ck! I was about to wake up. Maybe I should get some sleeping pills to increase my time with her. But I couldn’t, I had to be awake to find a way to rescue her and meet her for real, not only in a dream.

I whispered. I reached out for him as the wolves closed in on me, but before he could get to me, the nearest one turned and leapt. Its body hit the air— And I couldn’t tell where the shadows were coming from. Something pierced my heart, and I gasped. --- I woke up too fast, like something had pulled me out of darkness by force. For a few seconds I did not move. I lay still in the attic bed, staring at the wooden ceiling. My chest rose and fell unevenly, as if I had been running for a long time.

Stars POV- I woke up covered in sweat, I barely slept having nightmares all night and these cuffs cutting into my skin, leaving them feeling raw and bloody. I knew Willow didn’t get any sleep because of me. I looked over seeing the sun streaming through the window, I had no idea what time it was though. “Willow, wake up.” I started to try and shove her with my shoulder to wake her up. Her eyes slowly started to open, barely looking up at me.

“Awakening.” --- As the sigil glows brighter, Alexander realizes Project Rebirth has only just begun and Elena’s awakening might not be something he can stop.

Elara The awakening is cold, precise. No trace of the usual grogginess, only an immediate clarity, as if someone has flipped a switch in my brain. His command from the previous evening had worked with disquieting efficiency; my sleep was deep, dreamless, a plunge into the prescribed, restorative void. I get up, my body strangely light, my mind razor-sharp.
