The babysitter lasted four hours. Her name was Cara and she came highly recommended by two pack families who described her as unflappable, experienced with supernatural children, and entirely trustworthy. She was twenty-two and had been working with pack children for three years and arrived on her first morning with the calm professional confidence of someone who had handled difficult situations before and expected to handle this one. By noon she was sitting on the kitchen floor with her back against the cabinet and a slightly distant expression, like someone who had briefly visited a different reality and was still processing the return journey.

A babysitter is supposed to dress up warmly so as not to scare the kids. However, that isn't the case for me. Friday Evening I was sitting on the couch, pumping as I waited for Rip to finish explaining to Caroline and Jon about the babies' schedules.
