She leaned forward and hugged me back with the fierce strength of a child who had never known comfort.
“The humans still hate the sea,” Marina whispered into my neck. “They still poison the coast. I was so scared they would come and hurt me, too.”
“They won’t, not again,” I vowed. “I am the Queen of all packs, and I now command the air. Soon, I will command the water, and we will protect the deepest places. But I cannot command the water without your help. I need you to teach me, Marina.”
Marina pulled back, her composure returning as the sense of purpose settled in. The pure, indigo light in her eyes steadied, and she became less child and more powerful entity.
