LYRON “ Aren't you sleepy?” I asked as I sat beside him. “ I still want to hear a bedtime story though,” he pouted. I couldn't say no to his cuteness even though Ryan had complained that I might be spoiling him a bit too much. “ Then I'm going to read you one that's really short,” I made myself clear before walking over to his bookshelf and taking out a suitable story. “ What's the name of this one?” He was excited.

"Oh no, no, no. Because, ladies and gentlemen, that was not her only legendary moment. Let us now recall. the banana peel incident." Sabrina leapt out of her seat. "NOPE! That's it! Storytime is officially over. Saben, bedtime." Saben pouted. "Aww, but—" "No buts, young man," Saben said scooping him up into his arms. "Mommy's dignity is at stake." Benedict still chuckling kissed her on the forehead. "I will put him to bed tonight." Saben beamed. "Yay! Daddy reads the best bedtime stories."

The boys were too tired to put up their usual bedtime resistance, allowing themselves to be tucked into their beds with minimal fuss. "Story?" Ethan requested, his eyes already half-closed. "Short one," I promised, settling into the chair between their beds while Thomas leaned against the doorframe. I chose a familiar story about brave little mice going on adventures, my voice soft and soothing in the dim light of their room. By the time I reached the end, both boys were fast asleep, their breathing deep and even. Thomas and I tiptoed out of their room, leaving the door slightly ajar as always.

Maybe I let them watch too many fairy tales. “Ok, girls.” I clapped my hands, ushering them. “Go back and play please. Bedtime in an hour.” It was that easy to dismiss my girls. Just the mention of bedtime and they disappear faster than the hummingbirds. Or the roadrunner in those old cartoons with Wile E. Coyote. Turning my attention to his companion, I extended my hand out to hers to shake it.

"Can we put Aiden to bed?" Evan requested from Lily and Lucas. "Does he still listen to bedtime stories?" Shantelle asked. "Does he want a glass of milk and a cookie before going to bed?" "Oh, I love bedtime stories!" Aiden responded with enthusiasm. Lily nearly coughed out blood at his son's answer because Aiden graduated relatively early from bedtime stories. At six, he was already learning basic coding for kids. Bedtime stories bore him, but he wanted to hear one from Lucas' mother.

This conclusion now roused Zamin from his sleep. "Zamin!" Madiha's voice was urgent as she tried to wake him, even shaking his head slightly. "Ma.. Madiha...?" Zamin mumbled groggily, looking at Madiha who appeared very serious. He then glanced at the wall clock to check the time – it was almost 1 am. "What's wrong?" Zamin's sleepiness faded as he became fully awake. "Was that girl aunt Iman, the one whom uncle Dabir loved?" Madiha's voice was soft, as if she feared being overheard in their locked room.

For a few minutes, there was nothing but silence apart from their fighting breath and the faint spluttering of the extinguished fire. He turned over onto his back, and drew her in close to him, and reached around from where they lay on the armchair, for a soft throw to cover the two of them, then he kissed her sweaty forehead. "The story," she yawned, long and sleepily, "ended like that, then?"Kaelen nuzzled into her skin, grinning. "I suspect the author's conclusion was far less satisfying." He wrapped his arms around her once more. "The Library is closed for the night. Sleep."
