The connection was gone. Tears blurred my vision, hot and uncontrollable. I tried to breathe, but my lungs refused to expand, my body rejecting the very air around me. A sharp pain exploded in my head, and then—darkness. The last thing I heard before slipping into unconsciousness was distant footsteps rushing toward me.

I repeated, my voice dropping lower, and the shift in my tone was enough to make the doctor stiffen as the nurses beside him instinctively took a step back. “Then tell me,” I continued slowly, “why is she unconscious?” The doctor swallowed hard, clearly forcing himself to speak. “I-it actually happens quite often to people who experience sudden emotional trauma or the loss of a loved one,” he explained. “The shock causes a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure. I felt like I was drowning, suffocating in my own body. As I slipped into unconsciousness, I felt a sense of dread wash over me. I didn't know what they were going to do to me next, but I knew that it was going to be something terrible. The last thing I saw before everything went black was the doctors hovering over me, their faces obscured by surgical masks. As I turn to leave, I feel my legs buckle up under me and despite how hard I try to stay upright and not crumple into a heap on the ground, I fail to do so. My vision begins to turn black and my head feels very heavy. I think I faintly hear someone asking if I’m alright, but my mouth feels like it belongs to someone else and I can’t respond. I become unconscious before I even hit the ground.

Various dimmed-out voices floated into my head, as I watched them pack up the defibrillator solemnly before a white cloth was drawn over Roman. I shook my head as I desperately wished that moment to be a nightmare. "No, this can't be happening." That was the last thing I said before my legs finally gave in under me and I slipped into unconsciousness.
