Before You Slip Into Unconsciousness Novels & Stories

My knees cup up to press against my chest… my eyes close down… I feel my heart beat slowing down. Yes… this is it… Yes. “ Sixty two… sixty three…” . . . He didn’t say anything after that. I was thankful. The soft hum of the car relaxes my mind even further. “ Hundred and one… hundred and two..” And that’s when I feel it happening. My body giving up, surrendering. I was going unconscious. And that’s what I wanted. People faint under stressful conditions because their body is trying to protect them.

They move swiftly, administering necessary medical interventions, monitoring my vital signs, and ensuring my comfort as best they can in the confined space. Yet, the pain, fear, and blood loss overwhelm me, causing my consciousness to slip away. The world around me blurs, becoming a hazy and fragmented collage of flashing lights and muffled voices. Despite my desperate attempt to hold on, my weary body succumbs to the darkness, and I drift into unconsciousness. When I wake up, I find myself in a hospital bed. I don’t know how long I've been unconscious. My hand instinctively reaches for my belly, desperate for any sign of reassurance.

My vision blurs, and I Stagger before falling ungracefully to the floor. I blink, trying to stay awake, but I couldn't help it. Black seeps into my vision, and I fall unconscious.

“That was two days ago. Please encourage her to take better care of herself. He is out of the worst danger, for now, so she can relax. Thank you, doctor.” Silence envelops the room and now that I have nothing to focus on my consciousness begins to fade. The doctors’ words about slipping into a coma are rattling around in my mind and I try my best to fight the darkness as it relentlessly pulls me under.

It was only a matter of seconds before I passed out, my head hitting the cold floor as I slipped into unconsciousness, my last thought echoing in my mind: How did my life suddenly take such a terrible, wrong turn?

Darkness closed in before his eyes, and his consciousness sank completely into pitch black oblivion. Beep… beep… beep! “This is bad. Mr. Crowe’s heart rate is dropping fast. Get the defibrillator ready, now!”

My senses went numb as panic set in, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. What now? I thought trying to stand up as dizzy spells overtook me. My body felt weak, and my vision blurred, making it difficult to focus on anything other than the alarming sight before me. And before I knew it, everything went dark, and I collapsed to the ground in a heap. The last thing I heard was the sound of footsteps approaching, fading into the distance as unconsciousness took over.

Stepping onto the tiled floor, a sense of renewed energy coursed through me. With damp hair trailing down my back, I made my way back to the bedroom. But I felt a sudden jolt in my body as I got slippery and my foot slipped. As my foot met the floor, it betrayed me, sending me into an ungraceful descent. Time slowed as I flailed, gravity asserting its dominance. I slipped and fell down. The world blurred, and with a sharp crack, darkness claimed me. Awareness returned in fragments, my surroundings started to get clear.

But as I turned to scrub my back my foot slipped out from under me and darkness came. As I slipped into unconsciousness I felt two large arms scoop me up. I could smell that calming smell again. Off my mind went into the sheering pain of complete darkness.

Her body was limp, unresponsive. I was about to scream again when suddenly, a sharp pain erupted at the back of my head. The lantern slipped from my grasp as darkness crept in from the edges of my vision. I tried to lift my head, to cry out, but my body betrayed me. Slowly I fell to the back, and I lost consciousness.
