Jacob walked behind me, his own eyes cast down, thinking about what lay beneath the mystery of my smile. Smiling gently, lips in a sweet curve, I walked alongside Jacob. My smile was the slow and deliberate kind, a slow smile spreading across my face like a sunrise sweeps across the sky. But Jacob had no idea why I smiled; the satisfaction and control I felt surged through my veins. He looked at me, seeking my eyes for an answer, but I simply continued smiling back in amusement with a glint in my eyes, savoring the moment.

Then a staff member touched her arm. The moment vanished. Lena smiled. Turned away. And continued walking. --- By dusk they retreated. Nobody argued. Nobody wanted to stay. The place crawled under their skin. The false peace. The manufactured contentment. The smiles. God. The smiles. --- The bookshop basement was unusually quiet when they returned. People gathered around the central table. Waiting. Watching. Hoping. Bea hated being the one who had to speak first. She rubbed her hands over her face.

“Baby… I’m sorry I was a bit rough, it's been…” “Shh… I know,” I whispered. He gently nudged my face and craned his neck so he could face me, and with our noses touching, he smiled at me. Christ! How was I able to survive all these years without him? I remember this smile -- this rear smile that always lights up my inside like an explosion of fireworks. This smile that I would spend a whole day anticipating and looking forward to doing something that would make him look at me like this.

"Well, from next time, I'll take you along, so that you'll not miss me enough to complain like this, okay my love?” Despite myself… I laughed, a real laugh, small and brief, but genuine. "There it is." I looked at him in confusion. "What?" "That smile." He pointed toward my face with his coffee cup. "I've been waiting for it since I arrived." I instinctively lowered my gaze. "I smile all the time, Zachary.” "No." His answer came immediately. "You smile for everyone." Then his voice softened. "But this one..." He paused for just a heartbeat. "...belongs to me…. So, smile like this only in front of me.”

“I can’t promise anything, you know that.” He put the book down and turned to face me. “Smile for me.” There was a flare of that old stupid grin that used to make me forget to be scared when he was near. I smiled and then I kissed him. It was clumsy at first — my mouth on his like I needed to remember the shape of him. He kissed me back, then deeper, like he’d been holding his breath and finally let it out. We’d missed each other. It felt like we’d been walking through fire to get to this stupid little moment.
