The night sky glowed softly with stars, and the moon, full and bright, hung like a spotlight over the field. Music thumped from tall speakers, filling the air with pulsing beats that made the ground feel alive. All around the field, students danced and drank, laughter blending with the rhythm. This wasn’t just any party. It was the Awakening Ceremony—the biggest night of the year for the werewolf campus.

I stood before the mirror, trembling. “Come out!” I screamed. My voice cracked. “Come out, damn you!” But there was no answer. “You're supposed to be my wolf companion! My protector! How could you, how could you kill him?” My breath came in ragged sobs. “You monster… You coward! Show yourself!” My wolf didn’t speak. It was like she’d buried herself deep inside me, ashamed, or worse… indifferent. I collapsed to the floor, broken and breathless, tears searing down my cheeks. I curled into myself, praying that this was all a nightmare, that I’d wake up and find my father humming in the kitchen, that the arena had never happened, that my wolf had never emerged.

He didn’t make a move to pick up the scattered papers, and neither did I. Who the fuck did he think he was? “I am not interested. Besides, Wolf Creek is a protected area, part of the reservation, and we have lived there for five generations. So, take your presentation, Mr. Lyon, and shove it!” I’ve heard enough. Joel and I turned to leave, but Lyon’s bulldogs blocked the entrance.

Could we make it there in time before this thing attacked us? The wolf didn’t seem to like my action, and it snorted, causing dust from the ground to fly into the air. Lifting his head, he growled once more, showing his sharp teeth. I felt my heart beat in my ears as I tried not to make any sudden movements. Was this what the professor needed to talk to me about? That wolves roamed the campus at night?

I tell her. “So, right now, we have thirteen wolves in residence. We’re slated to have three more join us before classes start in the next week. Five wolves major in different languages and cultures and double majoring in political science. When they’ve finished, they will move back to Arcadia to train to become ambassadors in the supernatural council. Two more are here for law school. One is here getting his medical degree as an oncologist. Four are in the digital art program with you. And the final three are our omegas,” Angela goes on to tell me, taking me towards her office. My eyes light up. “That’s awesome. So I’ll have a few wolves in the program with me.”
