"What are you trying to do?" "What can I do?" Clayton shrugged. "I'm just a lowly beastkin." No sooner had the words left his mouth than he lunged at Salem. Terrified, Salem instantly shifted into his beast form. The black wolfhound instinctively lunged at Clayton, its sharp teeth sinking viciously into his arm. Clayton was knocked into the coffee table, shattering it with a sharp crack as glass shards scattered across the floor. Salem was stunned. He wasn't expecting Clayton's move to be a feint.

“Leave that to me.” ... The ride to Blackwater Cove took the rest of the day. By late afternoon, they could hear the distant sound of waves crashing against rock reached their ears. The port was nothing like the grand harbors near the capital or the one they took to Havenwood. It was rough with weathered docks and small cargo ships. There were Fishermen who kept their heads down, others minded their business cautiously. “Stay close,” Drake muttered to both Elaina and Sachin protectively. But Sachin dismounted confidently and handed his reins to a dockhand as if he belonged there.

“That much you all know. But the rejection was only the first move. My nightmares—the ones I shared with Davon—they reveal the true enemy.” I looked directly at James, whose silver eyes were burning with intensity, then at Samuel, whose calm gaze absorbed every word. “The first vision is the Shadow Beast,” I explained, the words feeling cold and toxic on my tongue. “It is pure dark energy, a living void, wearing the face of a woman. She is beautiful and manipulative. This woman is preparing a Sacrifice that involves my power.” A low, collective growl rumbled around the table. Before I could continue, Davon leaned forward, his expression grave.

“I was born ready.” A beat of silence. “You’re starting a war,” he said, eyes flickering with something that could’ve been amusement… or a warning. “I love wars,” I said smoothly. “Especially ones I win.” Damon stood slowly, buttoning his suit. “Then I’ll see you on the battlefield, Mr. Blackwood.” He extended a hand. I stood too, took it, shook it once—firmly—and let go. “And may the best man win,” he added.

Author’s POV La Perla Negra—The Black Pearl—was a high-end brothel located on the outskirts of the city. It was owned and operated by Vincenzo, the crime boss who had saved her from a fate worse than death. He had transported Dolores there instead of the strip club he had signed her up for, so she would gain experience first.

A twisted combination of wolf and darkness, its body shimmering with black energy, it was unlike anything I had ever seen. "What is that?" With a quivering voice, Chelsea inquired. "An abomination," Dominick remarked in a chilly tone. "By means of black magic." Unexpectedly, the beast attacked, its claws tearing through the air. Dominick shoved me away and snarled fiercely in response to the assault. "Remain back, Lisa!" He yelled while using his claws to cut the beast. "No chance," I whispered as I moved to his side, holding my blade firmly. Dominick's POV

"Mh, I love when my food puts up a fight. The adrenaline makes them taste so much sweeter." A thud sounded behind me, and I stopped walking and turned to face the woman. Her blonde hair was in a thin bun on her head, and her lips were dry and cracked. Her skin was sucked tight against her bones, and beyond the scratch on her cheeks where a small amount of dried blood sat, they were pale and colorless… unlike her eyes. Those were black, different than anything I had ever seen. Instead of just the irises being black like bears had, the orbs were entirely black, reflecting their soul.

It gives him a few seconds before the hounds decide attacking is their best move. They might have gained some newfound intelligence, but Beast is smart and has had years of practice. Our eyes carry bloodlust, our bodies made for killing. Beast's claws rake a wide path across one throat and chest. It's not a killing blow, but the hound lists to the side and the other jumps around him. It's almost like he's protecting the hurt creature. Beast lets out a growl that rumbles clear to our feet and charges head-on. We clash and the hound goes to the ground with Beast on top. We grab his neck within our crushing jaws and crunch bone. The other hound lands on top of us, his snapping jaws taking a bit

The bond in my chest was a dull, terrifying ache that felt like a dying light. "Caspian... look at me... please..." I sobbed... my hands cupping his jaw... my tears washing the soot from his cheeks. I didn't care about the battlements. I didn't care about the northern army charging the gate. I didn't care about the men screaming in the trenches. I poured my First Moon heat into his skin, begging the man who had bought my soul to stay inside his body. Then a low, wet cough rattled his chest. Caspian’s eyelids flickered. When they opened, the silver was gone. They were pure, molten black... the Beast finally pushed past every limit of human endurance.
