Thin tendrils at first, then thicker ropes, blacker than night. The demonkin freeze. One of them—the smallest—takes a step back. His mouth opens in what might be a shout. The smoke surges. It wraps his legs like living chains. He thrashes, but the tendrils tighten, drag him down. His knees hit the floor so hard I feel the impact through my own bones. Suddenly, from the very center of the pentacle, a swirling mass of black smoke began to materialize, coalescing into a towering, amorphous form. This entity, devoid of any discernible features, exuded an aura of pure malevolence. Belle's heart raced as she took in the sight before her—this was her first encounter with a demon, a being she had scarcely believed could exist. Paralyzed with fear, she watched as the smoky figure loomed closer, its presence suffocating and terrifying.

A sudden bubble burst at its center, releasing a foul smoke that twisted into the air with a shriek I felt rather than heard. Then, as if it had never been, the black ooze dissolved, vanished into the stone like it had never existed at all. I stood still, heart pounding, the remnants of the stench still clinging to my lungs.

Then it devolved into pure, unadulterated chaos. The interior was a cathedral of decay. Rusted machinery cast long shadows in the light filtering through broken roof panels. The monsters were… wrong. They looked like boars, but their skin was scaled and glistening, their tusks dripping with a saliva that smoked where it hit the concrete. Their eyes were milky white, blind but somehow tracking us. Bryan was in his element, launching fireballs and laughing maniacally as he kited three of them around a giant, dead loom. “C’MON, UGLIES! RIGHT HERE!”

Maya’s lips pressed together, her skepticism faltering. “Describe it,” she ordered. “It’s… black. Shifting. Tight around his lungs, squeezing every time he breathes.” My hand hovered unconsciously over his chest, my fingers spreading as though to catch the smoke that danced just beneath his skin. “It’s not natural.
