I collapse beside her, chest heaving. She rolls toward me, kisses me slow, lazy, tasting both of us. I’m still catching my breath when she grabs my face, forces me to look at her. Her eyes aren’t brown anymore. They’re pure black. A smile spreads across her face that doesn’t belong to Lyra. Black smoke pours from her mouth, her eyes, her skin. It slams into my chest like a frozen blade. I try to pull away. Can’t. The smoke floods me. Burns cold.

Zevran said. She raised her hands, the flames forming a circle between them. “By my measure, you will burn no more in hunger, but in memory.” The black fire contracted into a single pulse—then exploded outward as pure white. The shockwave swept through the chamber, up the stairs, through the citadel, and across the plains. When it faded, silence reigned. The Black Moon in the sky flickered once, then began to bleed gold. Zevran sank to his knees, pulling Kaelira into his arms. Her skin still glowed faintly, her breathing ragged but steady.

With brown and dark green water swirling and dripping from everywhere. The metal monster was not much bigger than Taylor or Damiens six foot four, but had all the makings of a great steampunk robot with rusted bronze gears at every hinge and what appeared to be steam spouting from its cylindrical head. The white-blue flame guy was the smallest of the group, but wider, double the width of any of the other monsters. Its whole being was the sinister dark blue flame that faded to white at the tip. Every time it took a step it left a scorch mark on the ground. Little scars on the earth it was trying to claim.

The smile vanished from the monster’s face, and his two comrades looked at each other. She felt the one coming up behind her. His energy was evil, oily, a filth spreading across her porch and reaching her before he did. She turned and fired a missile right into his chest. Flames raced up his torso and he screamed, sprawling backward, rolling and then jumping off the porch to run. The wind fanned the flames as he raced away.

Therens never give up even though he was losing his balance. “Sleep! You monster!” Therens shouted showing fierce pain on his face as he grind his teeth. Therens shouts as he tried to deepen the dagger into the monster’s hard skin. Therens shouted in pain as the dagger’s handle went through its skin and blood oozed from the behemoth’s nape. The behemoth roared louder as it wiggled forcefully, Therens tried not to lose his balance. The dagger suddenly releases a black smoke evaporating in the air. Merfoy and Therens’ jaws almost dropped while watching the black smoke twirl around. The behemoth slowed its movement and its roaring sound stopped.

"I’m not hiding anymore." A monster jumped through the window. It wasn't a wolf. It was a "Hound of the Void"—a creature made of black smoke and giant white teeth. Its eyes were like two pits of fire. It let out a scream that made my bones shake. Rowan jumped at it. He tackled the monster mid-air, his long black claws ripping into its chest. But the monster didn't die. The smoke just moved back together and healed. "You can't kill a ghost, Alpha!" a voice shouted from the fog.

Suddenly, the main door to the building burst open, and Sky and Matt emerged, carrying Amber between them. What the hell had happened to her? Her eyes were empty like she was ensnared in some kind of spell. Black smoke swirled around her, and dread settled in my stomach. Controller vampires were here, no doubt. More cloaked figures emerged from the forest, and some of them closed in on Amber. I fought back, but these fuckers had powers. Black smoke streamed from their hands, thickening the air. My wolf, Simon, coughed. The smoke was toxic, rendering our warriors immobile.

Rosie looked at me while giving me a signal. We closed our eyes while spelling fire out. The fire lightened up and the monsters started burning in the fire. The monster was screaming in pain. Slowly, the monsters are burning, and my army is cheering in victory. Die monsters— Your master, Satan, can't cage us like this here in this jungle. I will beat up all the dangers so that I can destroy him. I look down at the ashes that are slowly starting to vanish in the thin air, as they were made by black magic, which is why they are now free of this world.
