The woman's voice uttered. One of the voices called out her name. Who is it? Looking around there was only darkness not a single sign of living life. She wanted to call out to the whispering voices but her throat got stuck and couldn't speak out. A heavy footstep slowly walked towards her way. The man was heavily armored with nasty demonic eyes it's axe aiming at her, a piercing pain shot through her heart.

I yelled releasing my sword of the righteous. I swung at the demon, his large burnt figure moved with a speed rivaled to that of a vampire. His eyes leaked magma as if it were crying. It opened its mouth roaring loudly at me, showing me its bright orange throat. I cut through its arm, causing it to let out a loud screech that harmed my hearing. I didn't have time to process as it slashed my chest with its claw like fingers.

My breathing stutters, then slows. “What is he doing here?” a healer snaps. “This is forbidden—” Lucien doesn’t answer. I feel him come closer. Each step sends a ripple through the bond, soothing where it was screaming seconds ago. The pressure on my bones eases. The grinding stops. My spine lowers back onto the mattress. “Oh gods,” Mara breathes. I gasp as my lungs finally draw a full breath, the air no longer shredding me from the inside. The pain recedes in waves, leaving behind exhaustion so deep I can barely keep my consciousness tethered.

For a second, I actually thought— No. I walked closer quickly, my heart picking up speed as I leaned down and placed my fingers under his nose. A second passed. Then another. And then I felt it. A faint breath. I let out a breath I didn’t even realize I was holding. “He’s still breathing,” I said, more to myself than anyone else. But barely. And that wasn’t good at all. But suddenly, Dahlia’s voice echoed in my head. ‘You’re the last bloodline of the Emberwyn.’

(Lyra’s POV) I wake to the sound of Rylan breathing like it hurts. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just… wrong. Each inhale catches, like his lungs have to remember how to work. Each exhale is too slow, too controlled, like he’s rationing air because his body no longer trusts itself to keep going if he doesn’t. The room smells of iron and burned magic.

The gusts of wind spun around her, tearing at the edges of the dust cloud, slowing the ram down. It bought us a second or two, just enough for the vortex to diverted his path. Aries veered right, his fiery horns carving a molten trench into the air that evaporated and made it more difficult to see. I tried to stand, but my legs felt like lead. The demon’s mark on my chest was burning, a rhythmic pulsing that synchronized with my heartbeat. It felt like a hot coal was buried under my skin. “You okay?” Pelin panted, dropping her stance as the wind died down.

Her heart threatened to beat out of her chest. Oh God. Please, not now. “Domini? Baby, what’s wrong?” “I can’t breathe.” She flapped her hand in front of her face as if that would help. “Shit.” Cam hauled her to her feet. He put his palms over her ears and tipped her head to look directly into her eyes. “Breathe with me. Nice and slow, okay?” Below her line of vision, she could see his chest expand as he inhaled. She followed his lead. In. Out. In. Out.

I begin to gasp for air. “What’s wrong, Damian? Can’t seem to breathe? Think of this as a vortex that can simply take your breath away! Just like that girl of yours seems to do. Soon you will run out of air and choke on your last breath! Your lungs have to be burning by now! Not only will Raiden be happy that you’re dead but I get a prize as well! That girl will be mine! I hope she can breathe once my dick is inside her!” He taunts. My fists clench as something takes a hold of me. My breathing evens out as I start to shift into my demon form. A deep roar escapes my chest and the tornado suddenly catches on fire.

I watched the guy who had tried to save me lay still in a pool of his blood and begged the gods to make his chest rise in a breath. Please, please breath Darian's breath fanned my ear. The silence around us was choking the air in my lungs and forced me to hold my breath. Darian's grave voice broke the silence and I released my breath “Look at what you’ve done,” he said coldly. Before I could see the warrior take a breath and prove to myself that he wasn't dead, I felt something blunt against the back of my head and everything went dark with something wet dripping down my back.
