Meredith I was already moving, and there was a roar in my ears, and all I could see was his face. I don't remember deciding to cross the floor. One second I was at the table with Kieran's blood drying on my hand, and the next I was halfway across the hall with my whole body aimed at the man in the doorway. His words were still in me, lodged somewhere they wouldn't come loose. Should've stayed dead at the pass. Kieran was bleeding behind me and this man was laughing about it, and my wolf had gone somewhere past thinking, somewhere I couldn't reach to call her back from.

Blood from my nose had run past my lips and chin, smearing across my cheeks and ears. The front of my shirt had long since lost its original color. It was soaked through with blood. The pool beneath me had spread to Derrick’s shoes, sticky and dark. “Harriet?” Derrick’s voice trembled. He called my name again. “Harriet?” Mom had been celebrating Sheila’s safe return. When she saw Derrick storm toward the storage room, she followed him. The sight before her made her scream. She covered her mouth and staggered back a step. Dad had been comforting the frightened Sheila. After hearing the commotion, he rushed over as well.

I staggered backward, clutching my chest, trying to steady myself, but the air around me seemed to thrum with a strange rhythm that matched the pounding of my heart. At first, I thought it was only dizziness, the consequence of being pushed too hard. But then I saw it, faint trails of light racing beneath my skin. My veins, glowing softly like molten threads, lit up in places where my pulse struck hardest. I gasped and stumbled again, staring at my hands, horrified by the way my body no longer looked entirely mine. It was as if something ancient and violent was carving its way out of me.

I screamed, feeling on the verge of losing my mind. Blood was dripping from my fingers, but I didn't even feel the pain as I gripped the blade. Mom didn't even glance at my injury. She nodded firmly. "Yes!"

After a long wait, the doctor finally came out. Josiah looked at him and did not dare to ask for the result. He was afraid of bad news. Of course, the doctor did not need him to speak, so he took the lead.
