I haven’t spoken to my parents since the last time Jane reared her ugly head and tried to butt into my life. Jane Burns, the bleach-blonde menace in designer heels, had no business in this restaurant, let alone Newark. She didn’t look at me first. Nope, her eyes zeroed in on Ofelia, narrowing with instant recognition. The twitch of her lip told me she remembered everything. The ruined suede shoes. The faint scratch on her arm. The smug calico who’d delivered justice without flinching.

Anna replied, her voice steady. They passed the diner. Through the window, Anna saw Jane Keller look up from her coffee, her eyes widening. Jane raised a hand in a tentative wave. Anna waved back, her heart aching with a sudden, sharp memory, Jane and Carly and her, squeezed into a booth senior year, sharing fries and plotting their futures. They passed the library, the bank, the ice cream shop. Some people looked away, their faces tight with disapproval. Others nodded, accepting. A few, the ones who knew, the ones who were pack or pack-adjacent, smiled genuine smiles.

I wasn’t lying when I told Jack that I didn’t want to be one of those girls who forgot about their friends just because they had a boyfriend. I dropped my duffle bag and backpack off in her bedroom and shrugged off my coat. I’d come over already dressed in my comfy clothes, and I sank into Fiona’s wide, comfortable couch. Jane stayed away from their circle, but she knew that Joe worked for Blake. "You stop reading because it feels like work instead of escape." "Exactly," I said, relieved that he got it without me having to explain. "I keep rereading the same pages and realizing I don't remember anything I just read." He smiled. "That's why book club helps. Other people keep you accountable. I’m part of a book club actually that started out in January. It’s just a dozen people, and we read different genres every week. But it’s so nice, and it helps to keep me accountable because without it, I won’t even read anything."

She was too embarrassed to face Lisa and wanted to ensure she did not run into Benny. "Are you alright? You look withdrawn and disturbed... What's up?" Jeff's voice broke into her thoughts. Jane forced a smile, "I am fine. I just need more rest. I was really busy yesterday with one of my clients," Jane responded. "Oh! Sorry about that... He asked. "No. I'm not going to work today," Jane replied as she arranged the sheets. "You're taking the day off?" "No, I am also not taking the day off. I have a meeting with.." Jane paused and thought quickly. "With a magazine publisher so I won't be available until noon." "Okay," Caleb folded his hands, still watching her. "Is this about what just happened with Bianca?" Jane turned to face him fully this time. "Bianca? I don't care about Bianca, or Stella. I'm totally over them."

Jane says softly, not even looking up from Rowan as I retreat to my room. ~~ Tuesday is somehow worse. Since we're both off work, Jane suggests we have a girls' day. Mani-pedis and brunch, her treat. I can't think of a valid excuse to refuse, so I spend four hours sitting across from her at a nail salon, nodding along as she talks about places she's visited and how lucky she is to have found Rowan. "He's just so good, you know?" Jane says, admiring her freshly painted nails. She chose a soft pink that matches her skin tone perfectly. "So genuinely kind. Not just on the surface, but deep down. I've dated a lot of guys, and none of them compare."
