The light illuminated the space, full of old objects and stacked boxes. As she walked, a loose floorboard creaked beneath her feet. She bent down to see what it was and, with some effort, lifted the board. She found an old book, covered in dust, with a leather cover filled with drawings of supernatural creatures. Scarlett’s heart began to race; something about the book drew her in, as if it held secrets waiting to be discovered.

Enzo’s POV I chewed on the inside of my cheek as I stared down at the book. Simply Elemental, it was called: a battered old paperback that looked as though it had been passed around a lot, the spine bent out of shape, the corners dog-eared. I picked up the scrap of paper that had fallen from it and went to tuck it back inside the cover. I paused, the paper curling in my palm. I could look at it. Just quickly. Nobody would ever know…

Chapter 17 Part 1 Ana’s POV “I love you.” I lost it when Luke said that. I just felt like he’s saying goodbye. I shook my head and cry my eyes out as he chuckle while bandaging his palm that got slash by the knife earlier. “I’m so sorry.” I said again and again while I watch him.

The longer you sulk, the sooner you’re caught. I cracked the first book open. Ancient ink, brittle parchment, faded sketches of sigils and family trees. Everything looked important. Aurelia would skin me alive if I brought the wrong scraps. I leaned close, torchlight spilling faint gold across the page. One phrase caught my eye, “The Blessing of the Broken Line.” My brows furrowed. I tore it carefully, folding it into my pocket. Another page, another sigil. Then another. I worked slow, patient, but every sound echoed like thunder, the scrape of parchment, the soft tear of paper fibers. My heart raced faster each time.

AMELIA “I can’t believe it didn’t work,” I grunted in anger as I stabbed the sword into the book, and it did nothing. “It’s empty now, but a piece of useless old shit.” The book was around four inches thick. The hardcover seemed to be made of animal skin. The smell was like an old rotten dead rat. I was expecting suggestions, but everyone’s mouth was shut this time. “Really?” My eyes narrowed at them. “Now I need your unsolicited advice and you’ve got nothing. You, Theia. You’re very opinionated. What do you have in mind?”

It looks like… a journal. My heart beats faster. I carry it back to the chair and sit, holding the strange book carefully. It feels fragile in my hands, like it might fall apart if I’m not gentle. When I open it, the pages let out a soft crackle. They’re yellowed with age, but still readable. A few pages in, something slips out and lands on my lap. It’s a picture.

I want to read! I stood up the sofa and half run to the books. Damn all my fav’s are here! This is heaven! I got a book entitled ‘The stars of us’. Just as I was about to read the first page of the book, my phone vibrated from my pocket. Ohhh, it’s Elocin. I know what she wants, probably can wait to hear what I was gonna say so she would like to talk about it on the phone. Gosh! “Hello” I answered.

The knowledge of the lie settled into my jaw, locking my teeth against the bitter taste of a commitment made in the dark. Then the heavy basalt pack stone resting in my breast pocket lurched. It pulled free of the wool by itself, rising into the dead air between us. The stone split down the center with a sharp, tectonic crack, a harsh white light burning out from the core. The mineral grain dissolved, unspooling into a long, pale parchment that hovered in the air before my eyes. The script was written in the high formal ink of the council:

I press my hand to him, trying to get him to stay still. “I can help,” I murmur, fumbling with the heavy book in my lap. He pauses, eyes darting to the old book. His gaze hardens in suspicion but then softens. He recognizes what it is. I flip frantically through the brittle pages. 39… 91… 180… Focus. My fingers finally find the right page and relief washes over me when I spot the illustrations. I place the book next to me and take the bag, searching for the right leaves stuffy stuff. I do not know what. At least the book has pictures in color.
