The words 'Book of Life and Death' were printed on it. "The Book of Life and Death?!" He was surprised. Walter and Barry gulped. Was that really the Book of Life and Death?

“Quiet doesn’t mean unbothered. Just good at hiding it.” We fell into silence. The only sound was distant thunder rumbling above ground. I wondered how long we’d be down here. Minutes stretched. My mind wandered to how close he was. How alone we were. “Tell me something,” I said finally. “Why’d you become a librarian? You don’t seem like the type who likes being stuck behind a desk all day.” Mr. Kane exhaled softly. “Books don’t talk back. They don’t expect small talk. I like the order. And the stories. What about you? History major with a focus on obscure trade? That’s not common.”

“I–” “Oh, or am I even qualified to talk about forgiveness?” I cut in. “After you came back from studying abroad, you were never short on women. Compared to them, an ex like me isn’t worth mentioning. In your eyes, I probably don’t even count as a person; I’m just a backup you can keep around for life.” Finn denied it over and over again. “No. That’s not what I think. Be sensible. Every word carried a commanding tone. The elegant script introduced the book as being written by a man who claimed to have lived amongst the Fae, and from his experience in the Fae Court had taken a collection of hearth stories and told the truth behind them.

I closed my eyes that moment, feeling his cold icy breath resting on my face, thinking he was like a dead guy whose ghost still lingers on this earth, and was here to disturb my slumber. And came along with my painful memories, were like books with chapters, deep and horrible, and the suffering I wanted to end. I recall how my body jarred with each blow, how the pain seared through my skin, and took away every feeling of safety I ever had. I vaguely remembered my childhood, my family with me, but my longing to journey to succeed, my dreams to be recognized, to get out of my miserable life burned in my heart like a tattoo.
