Ethan with the wine on the sofa, reading, present in the background in the way that was entirely his. She wrote at the bottom of the review: The forty-fifth year was the year of arrival. The Ground Keeps was published in the spring of the sixteenth year. The same publisher. The same editor, who had shepherded both books with the specific quality of someone who understood the argument across two books and did not try to make either into something other than what it was. The editor had come to the estate in the winter — a visit that was unusual, since most of the work had been done by correspondence. She had wanted to see the place before the book came out, she said. She had wanted to understand the ground that kept the account.

The inside cover still had a lined card attached to it that was half-full with barely legible checkout dates stamped in faded black ink. The most recent date was sometime in May, 1935—almost eighty years ago!
