Edward stared expectantly at her, waiting for her to continue. Lord, but the woman did love a good story. His brothers sat back, resigned to Maddie’s colorful retelling. “The lass is Mary Stewart,” she said again. “She bears the royal crest of Alexander. I saw it, branded on her leg. She’s the heir to Neamh Álainn.”

Nights on the mountain were peaceful. Sarah would sit by the window, her face illuminated by candlelight as she read the few books they had at home. They were mostly second hand novels, dog eared and worn, but they were treasures to her. She would press her fingers to the faded words, tracing their outlines as if memorizing every curve, every letter. Her mother, Mary, would come in sometimes, her arms full of firewood, her face tired but warm. “Books are like windows,” Mary would say, patting Sarah’s hand. “Even if you can’t see everything yet, they’ll open up worlds for you someday.”

I laugh at the clever word play. "Can we go in there?" I plead. Jack looks to where I'm pointing, "Of course." He smiles at me. I smile super hard and stare at the adventure ahead of me. We walk in and I look at a ton of cooking books, dog calendars and more. There's a book there called, Dear Nobody. It's a true story about a girl named, Mary Rose, who has to deal with her drug addiction and boys. The book interests me. I show Jack. "Out of every book in this store, you choose the one about an addict?" Jack raises his eyebrows. I shrug.

I have been engrossed in a collection of traditional fairytales with a mafia spin. They were captivating, and I cherished the quiet moments when I could indulge in reading them. Stephanie Swann was one of my favourite authors, and I loved the worlds she created in her books, especially the morally ambiguous male characters and fierce female leads. After devouring three chapters, I glanced at the clock and sighed in disappointment, realizing I would have to wait until tomorrow to read more.

"Oh, you noticed. But it isn't something you should worry about, you know. Your dad just needs some time. He'll come around." It was something she was telling herself too. Something she wished would happen soon. "Okay, mommy." Maryam picked up her book. "What are you reading?" asked May, trying to start up a new conversation. She didn't see the book's title because half of the purple cover was peeled off. "Purple Hibiscus," Maryam replied excitedly. "Written by Chimamanda Adichie, my favorite author," she added. "Isn't that too much for you? Do you even understand a word?" May thoughtfully asked.
