She finally put down my photo and cooked a full table of dishes I loved once.
However, no one ate much. Dad, who never touched alcohol, drank bottle after bottle in silence.
That night, Mom slid into the bathtub after filling it to the brim with water. Then she held my photo to her chest and sang a lullaby before closing her eyes.
In the next room, Dad lay drunk on the bed, turned away from the bathroom door. He squeezed his eyes shut as a single tear rolled down his cheek and onto the sheets.
The next morning, Dad buried her. He was calm and quiet, his back a little more hunched than the day before.
