I want to run, to escape this room, but Cain is so close to the door it feels like he’s blocking it. So I flee into the bathroom instead slamming the door shut behind me.

A man dressed in a blue and black uniform stood at the widely opened gate; Caitlyn guessed the man was his gatekeeper. Immediately the gate opened, he ignited his car's engine and moved his car with such force that Caitlyn fell to the floor, again. “I'm sorry, sir! I'm so sorry,” she watched his gatekeeper apologise while bowing. He ignored the man and simply drove in. Caitlyn rushed over to the gatekeeper. “Can you let me in, please?” she pleaded shamelessly with a smile.

[Cillian’s POV] I closed the heavy oak doors of our bedroom. The heavy metal latch clicked into place. That single, quiet sound felt like a massive wall dropping between us and the rest of the world. I stood by the door for a long moment. I let out a slow, deep breath.

Julian's reply came instantly. Brother: [Do I need to come get you?] Even through the screen, she felt the cold, unyielding edge in his tone. Afraid he might actually appear at her door, she dropped her tablet, grabbed her phone, and hurried out. Standing at his door, she hadn't even reached for the bell when another message appeared. At the far end, beneath an archway, stood a door. A thin line of light glowed beneath it. The third-floor archives. She knew it without being told. Violet walked toward it slowly, every sensible part of her brain screaming in increasingly creative ways. The door was not locked. Of course it was not. Nothing important in Cain House was locked when it wanted to be found. She pushed it open. The room beyond was long, windowless, and colder than the hall. Metal cabinets lined one wall. Wooden shelves lined the other. Boxes stacked in careful rows reached almost to the ceiling, each labeled in black ink by year, department, or family name.

Right now there was only the facts and the dark and the smell of old paper. Behind me, the door creaked. Cedar and iron filled the room, drowning out the smell of old paper. "What are you doing here?" Cain asked.

Salt air and no school and maybe room to say the things I need to say. Then Cain is already out of the car and up the porch steps before the rest of us have moved. My mother makes a sound when she sees the house, small and delighted, and Marcus squeezes her hand like he knew she’d do exactly that. I get out and stand on the gravel and watch Cain at the door. He knows which key. He doesn’t check, just picks it and puts it in. The door sticks at the bottom and he pushes it with his shoulder without thinking, muscle memory from a hundred other summers, and then he’s inside.

'Great. Cain smirked, his eyes dancing with mischief. "Still carried you, Princess. And you're definitely heavier now." My jaw dropped. "Heavier?!" I looked at my legs. They were toned, but still.
