The coal in my chest went warm. His forehead was an inch from mine. A great crash. Thornwood's heavy gates were kicked open from the outside. Night wind and snow blew in. The laughter in the hall cut off dead. I lifted my head. In the doorway stood a figure I'd thought I would never see again in this life. Northern frost and snow had settled on the black rite-cloak; that hard, cold face flickered in and out of the firelight. Cain.

"Listen to me carefully, my queen. No matter what happens tonight... do not listen to your sister's voice. Do not follow her. Promise me that." My stomach knots tightly. "What are you talking about?" Cain doesn't answer. He only gently urges me forward again, leading me down another corridor that feels even spookier. We finally stop in front of a massive carved door. "Your chambers," he says softly. I head inside. The room is breathtaking, with black silk sheets, golden accents and a huge bed that looks fit for a king and his queen. But right now it only makes my heart race with nerves. "Tiana," I say quickly. "Can you send for her? I'd like her company tonight."

I followed Claire down the central corridor, past a glass-walled conference room where three people sat around a table covered in documents, past a row of closed doors with no nameplates, past a wall of windows that looked out over the city at an angle that made everything below look small and very far away. I had read about this building. I had studied this man's professional history across fourteen pages of notes written at two in the morning. But walking through the space where he actually operated was different. Everything up here had been chosen. Every surface, every place, every degree of silence. -Cain- The door swung open, creaking ominously, and I could hardly believe my eyes. I barely noticed the stench of death and blood that clung to the air like a shroud. Unable to reach Max, I had to go to his office. When I arrived, neither Max nor Coco were there. The receptionist mentioned they were at Disneyland. The manager tried to brief me on company matters, but I waved him off. "I'm just dropping something off." However, I froze in shock when I opened the door to Max's office. The once minimalist black-and-white decor was then splashed with color, the artwork replaced by intimate photos of Max and Coco. A corner of the room had been converted into a mini-suite, complete with a bed, shower, and—shockingly—a pair of pink lingerie hung on the wall. The curtains were stained, and there was an unmistakable odor permeating the space.

Deep down, I knew that Cain could put his life on the line for me, but the fear of being caught by Terrace just seemed to be eating me up. A knock on the door prevented me from saying my next words, and as though it was planned, Cain and I cleared our throats at the same time. “Open!” Cain barked. If he didn’t, whoever was behind the door wouldn’t hear because of how thick I ensured my doors and walls were. The door opened, and Terrace’s bodyguard was ushered in by my doorman. “You may leave,” I told my doorman, waving him off. He bowed slightly and left, closing the door gently behind him.
