A door banging against the concrete wall as boots come stomping between the cells. Cain’s looming presence appears outside the door, growls filling the space in Theo’s cage. Scurrying like a crab, I try to put space between myself and the predator hunting me. The fear that had subdued listening to Theo’s stories have returned, making it harder to breathe. “Hate to break up the reunion,” Cain sneers, unlocking the door and stepping inside. “But Dove and I have an appointment.” “No,” I refute, my head shaking furiously, making my refusal quite known. “Don’t come near me.”

I moved down the quiet hallway. Room 407 was scribbled on a plain black door in gold numbers. I stared at them for too long. My hand shook when I raised it to knock. It opened before I could. Cain stood there, tie already loosened, top button undone. The room behind him was dim. He didn’t smile. “You came,” he said. “I shouldn’t have.” My voice came out smaller than I wanted. I stepped inside anyway. The door clicked shut behind me. “This is stupid. I told myself I wouldn’t.”

Dangerous. “Open the door, Adrian,” the man on the other side said. “We need to talk.” Adrian’s stomach twisted. He recognized the voice. The man who had barged into his home earlier. The man who had made everything worse. “I told you we don’t have anything to talk about,” Adrian growled, his hand tightening around the door handle. “So you can either leave, or I’ll make you leave.” The man’s laughter filtered through the door, a cruel, mocking sound that sent a chill down Adrian’s spine. “I think you’ll want to talk to me, Cain. Unless you want the mess I’m about to bring to your doorstep. That includes your little friend.”

Cain's POV Running my fingers through my damp hair, I couldn't care less if my hair was all over the place as I leaned into my 'crowbait' which happened to be my retro swivel chair, like Marvin always called it, my gaze glued to the door. Every movement Marvin did as he twisted the door open, I watched on with a ticking heartbeat until her familiar, lithe figure appeared right in front of my eyes like a too-good-to be -true dream.
