But the Hollanders’ bride price already paid for your brother’s tuition. And with their background, we can’t afford to offend them.” The Hollanders didn’t have a good reputation in town. Mark’s father had killed someone and gone to prison. Mark dropped out after middle school and ran with a group of thugs. My skin scorched where the rune pulsed under my sleeve, as if it responded to his words. “No,” I muttered. “It’s not true. It’s not true.” Lucien’s gaze softened not with kindness, but with conviction. “You’ll see soon enough. You can fight me, battle the bond, fight yourself… yet you can’t fight fate.” He slipped into shade, leaving the air colder than before. I looked at Kael, trembling. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

I only let my silent tears flow. Tears that carry my pain, my defeat. Maybe fate can't be fought after all.

“That she’ll freeze. Let this all happen *to* her because she’s had practice doing that. That’s different.” Rian huffed a breath. “Goddess has a cruel sense of humor,” he said. “Two of us. One of her. All of this. And she’s the one we’re supposed to ask to make a choice when everyone else has been choosing for her her whole life.” Kael’s hand flexed over his mark. “We deal with fate,” he said. “She deals with us. On her own terms.” Rian’s grin was faint and bitter. “Scary,” he said. “And kind of hot.”

He muttered before he went on through the entrance. My eyes travelled to where Ellen and the others were; I noticed how weak and helpless they were. Liam was already passed out, and only Ellen, Kellen and Mark tried their best to stay awake. I wish I could help them. However, I couldn't since I was powerless.
