Felix shouted to be sure that Adam heard him from the stairs. “You can go fuck yourself Felix!” Adam shouted back.” Felix spent the next days going on different dates with different kind of people. He had felt a connection during some of those dates but some where just awful and depressing. He had gone on a date with a cat lady once. She had seemed pretty normal till the topic of pets came up. She then proceeded to show Felix her gallery of cats and all the things she liked and didn’t like about each and every one of her thirty two cats.

KATRINA I spent the next thirty minutes of my life—not sure if I wasted it—listening to Kane and the kids’ explanation of how they found the kitten. It was a little unbelievable and I wanted to conclude that they went to get it and then came up with this bizarre story but when I look back at my life, I’m not someone to not believe the most implausible things. They were fishing and had stashed their wooden buckets with loads of fish. When they were done, Aurora and her siblings loaded their catches into the car not too far from there and rode home.

Nathan smiled, gave her a quick kiss on the lips, and said, “If it is a story that you want, then a story it shall be.” The couple moved to the bedroom, and once they were comfortable, Nathan began his story: “When I was sixteen, I had a cat that I liked very much. One winter day, the cat fell into the water. We thought that the cat was dead, but then a little girl jumped in to save it. Unfortunately, the cat still died. It froze to death.” “That’s a sad story.” There were tears in Crystal’s eyes. “I guess cats don’t have nine lives after all. What was its name?”

"You wanna talk about it?" Now it was my turn to stare at Rondy. I hadn't told him much about my past. It was hard to without giving the secrets away. Something inside me wanted him to know what I'd done, though. I didn't sugarcoat it. "I sold myself to a male cat when I was twelve. When the leader of our pride found out, he cut off my arm. He was angry because he wanted me first. The man wasn't punished, just me." Horror washed over Rondy's face.

How does that qualify for overtime compensation? Samuel's shrill voice blasted through the phone. "And besides, I haven't even gone after you for leaking corporate secrets. Now, you're demanding money from us? Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds?" I forced myself to stay calm. "Mr. Cooper, I'll say this one more time—I did not leak any corporate secrets!" That is, unless chatting to the company's stray cat during downtime somehow counted as leaking confidential information. Samuel hung up immediately, then turned around and started updating the company group chat with text messages.

Elaine collected strangely shaped stones. I tried to fish and discovered the fish in the valley could talk. One poked its head out of the water and said, “Your bait is offensive.” I dropped the fishing rod. Elaine stared at me. “What happened?” “The fish talked.” “You can communicate with animals.” “I wasn’t expecting culinary criticism,” I said sarcastically. The fish surfaced again. “You’re also too loud.” Elaine fell backward laughing. “This isn’t funny.” “It’s the best thing I’ve seen since the wedding.”

"Whatever. I didn't come here for your fashion crimes. I came to trade." Air comes back into the world. I take some. Casually. Like a man whose life didn't just hang by the threads of a hoodie. "Trade what?" She slaps a folder against my chest. Actual paper. She's been in Dad's intake pile again. "Loon Lake. Came in Tuesday, Dad binned it. Fisherman says something grabbed his ankle in the shallows and pulled. He got loose, lost a boot, needed eleven stitches from something he swears was fingers. Dad wrote 'snapping turtle' on it and moved on."

After I finished eating my pasta, I cleaned the kitchen and walked to the village's front door to wave my hand at the orange cat and ask: “Be good, come here” He seemed to be very intelligent. When I waved, he quickly got up and ran to me. I took your friend to the aquarium in the backyard. There were a lot of fish in the fish tank, mostly carp. I found a net and fished out two to give to the cats. They came to bite the fish and held them in their mouths as they hurriedly ran to another house.
