I stared at it for a moment before setting it aside. A magazine clipping caught my eye. It was an article detailing Lila’s lavish birthday celebration—a big event with pictures of her smiling and holding hands with Asher. My heart skipped when I saw the date. November 9. Shit. That was my birthday too. I sank into the nearby chair, clutching the newspaper like a lifeline. My hands shook uncontrollably, and my pulse hammered in my ears. This couldn’t just be a coincidence, could it? Sweat dampened my skin despite the air-conditioning, which felt too cold and too stagnant now. I reached for the remote to turn it off and walked to the windows to open the blinds to let in natural air.
