Oh so she's a worshipper of the asshole as well! Too bad! Both of them shift into their wolves, Jessica's a medium sized brown wolf with brown eyes, and Emory’s a grey wolf with green eyes. “Begin!" The professor calls out.

Vivi raised her voice starting to lose patience with me. “Vivi…. He’s here…” Tears welled in my eyes as she realized what I speaking of. “Caleb’s here!” I chanted at her not knowing how my heart was feeling but it was feeling something that brought me immense sadness. “Kya please?” She begged me to go with her. Two silvery-spotted wolves approached us from the bushes a few yards ahead. They looked bloodthirsty with saliva dripping from their canines and their eyes held a craze of no humanity. The two large brown officials leaped at them with intent to kill.

Too quiet. Rosa, Dickson, Lycan, and I walked side by side, weapons drawn. “No birds,” Rosa said. “No tracks either,” Dickson added. “That’s not normal.” Lycan sniffed the air. “They’re here.” We stopped near a clearing. That’s when we saw them. Three dead wolves. Not killed by humans. Not by blades. But torn apart. Clawed. Bitten. “We need to go back,” I whispered. “Now.”

“Suffering is not cruelty when it leads to improvement.” I shake my head weakly. “You could have helped without doing this.” “No,” he says calmly. “You would have resisted. Ethan would have resisted. Wolves always resist change that threatens identity.” He looks almost thoughtful now. “I have been planning this for centuries,” he continues. “I have studied wolves since before they had names for themselves. Their loyalty. Their pack bonds. Their emotional depth. All admirable. All inefficient.” My hands curl slightly. It is the only rebellion my body allows.

The council wolves, old and scarred, looked at each other. “If they forget,” one said, “the weight comes back to the sky. And to the Rememberer.” Nova nodded. “Then we remind them why.” She started a new kind of journey. Not planting petals where wolves forgot. Planting petals where wolves chose to forget. She walked east for 90 days. Found a village with no Both Trees. The trees there were plain. Green only. Wolves had painted their moons white. Blank. Smooth. “Why?” Nova asked the leader. He was young, maybe 40. Eyes tired.

The smell of cheap beer and grease usually kept my senses dull, but then the door opened. A scent hit me. It wasn't just good. It was a biological wrecking ball. Jasmine, rain, and the unmistakable, heartbreaking scent of a female wolf in distress. I turned my head slowly. She was small, drenched in some kind of sticky liquid, and her eyes were so swollen from crying she could barely see. She looked like she’d been through a war. Mine, my wolf hissed, the word vibrating in my marrow. No, I told him, gripping the edge of the bar until the wood groaned. We don’t do this. Not to a civilian.

Collin shrugged as he hefted the three wolves back to the transports. Once there, we were able to bind them with silver. Everyone else arrived, escorting malnourished civilians to the trucks. I watched, frowning as they were being loaded up. This Alpha is a piece of shit. He doesn’t deserve to be a leader if he treats his people like this. My head cocked as I saw a rogue start to climb into the truck of civilians. “Not him.” I quickly stepped forward, grabbing his collar. “What’s the meaning of this?” The rogue demanded, snarling at me.

I helped Novel into the carriage, ensuring she was comfortable before mounting my horse. The journey was quiet. We stopped mid-way so Novel could ride the horse with me for some fresh air, and when her eyes grew heavy with exhaustion, we moved her back to the carriage. By the time the sky turned the pale gray of dawn, the wooden palisades of the Wolf Village appeared. Relief settled in my gut, we would be safe here for a while. In my exhaustion, I had forgotten one crucial thing: wolves can smell humans from a mile away. It was an oversight I would soon regret.

I carefully opened the book, the pages crackling with age, and began to read. The text was written in an ancient script, difficult to decipher, but the more I read, the more a sense of dread settled over me. It spoke of a rare lineage of wolves, ones with powers that could either save or destroy. My heart pounded as the descriptions started to match what I had seen in Emily, the strange glow in her eyes, the way her presence had started to affect those around her, even me.

Fortunately, with the melding of my twin wolves my size all but doubled and he suddenly realized that he was no match for this wolf. My wolf manages to raise up to a standing position while grabbing “Ethan’s” fur with a firm grip. Taking a running start backwards and smashing his entire body against the book shelf located across the room hearing a loud snapping of bones upon impact. My wolf lets go and turns around just in time to see “Ethan” fall to the floor. Then suddenly my office door comes flying open as several wolves run into the room including Jessie and Beta Femme Jacobs. They had heard the commotion in my office out in the hall.
