A Flame in the Shadow
I asked, but she didn’t answer, she stepped aside, letting me stand where she had been.
The moment my foot crossed the sigil, the air changed. The ground pulsed. Something ancient stirred in the walls. A low vibration rippled through the stone, crawling into my bones. I sucked in a breath as a searing heat ignited in my chest, my fire, but underneath it… something colder. Deeper. Not heat but hunger.
“Ember?” Orion’s voice was strained, but distant.
I couldn’t answer. The world tilted. My shadow, all our shadows, stretched toward me, unnaturally twisting and merging. Then the fire inside me erupted… but it wasn’t gold. It was black.
