I squeak between fits of laughter. We’re watching Robin Hood: Men In Tights while Landry whips us up some yummy food in the kitchen. This is one of my all-time favourite movies because it always makes me laugh. Technically it’s a really sad scene. Robin has just come home to find his entire family and pets are dead, but it’s the way Blinkin’ tells him all this that makes it so hilarious. However, it’s when Blinkin’ perks up at the end and cheers, ‘Oh, it’s good to be ‘ome, ain’t it Master Robin?!’ that absolutely breaks me. “So, no documentaries about corporate greed either, I take it?” “Exactly,” she shoots back, crossing toward the kitchen. “I’m talking dumb comedy, the kind where you lose brain cells but gain a little peace. That’s what you’re getting and what we’ll be doing with the rest of our night, for once, I actually am looking forward to it, a little peace never hurt anyone.”

Slim I stared down at her, waiting for her to speak. Her eyes widened just a bit, and I knew I caught her off-guard. But as she laughed, I raised an eyebrow. "That," she paused to laugh. "That was smooth," she said, pulling away from me as she laughed. I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned back against the railing, waiting for her to sober up. As untimely as this was, it amused me how she could laugh in serious situations. It seemed like the only time she was genuinely happy.

Well, good thing I am doing a decent job at that anyway. I think... “I don’t really have anything in mind, which is exactly why I asked you to pick a genre you think might work,” I replied casually. She let out a sigh, clearly deep in thought, then said, “How about we go for something funny?” She paused for a moment and mumbled, “I could really use a laugh right now.” I nodded. “Comedy it is, then.” I scrolled through the comedies on N*****x and finally played one I thought would make her laugh, probably thanks to the A-list comedy actors in the cast.

’’ Adamie clasped his palms together. ‘‘I’m definitely getting the booze!’’ Andy said. ‘‘Drunk mofo,’’ Adamie replied, ‘‘Y’all remember that time Andy’ got so drunk at Brian’s party then he puked on the buff DJ and got his ass beat?’’ All of them apart from Andy burst into laughter. ‘‘Well, I’m better than fat Robert who passed out after taking two Oxycontine pills then got a dick drawn on his plumpy cheeks.’’ Andy defended.

She patted the spot next to her on the couch. "Come laugh with your old mother. The doctor said laughter is the best medicine." "Pretty sure he prescribed actual medicine," I said but settled in beside her. "Details, details." She waved dismissively. "Oh, this guy is hilarious. He does this bit about dating apps that'll make you cry." I curled my legs underneath me, grateful for the distraction. The comedian on screen was in the middle of a story about a disastrous blind date. "...so there I am, covered in spaghetti sauce, and she says, 'This isn't going to work. I'm gluten-free.'"

"I'm all ears." I started to cough, desperate to think of an excuse that wouldn't make me sound like a complete moron. "Um…we were just talking about…um, some funny movie I just saw?" "A funny movie," he repeated. His smirk grew, and he didn't believe me for a second. Quite rightly, really-we were crap liars. "Yeah!" Isabella jumped in, her voice a little over-eager. "It was a comedy. You know, one of those comedies that's really slapstick and goofy? Lots of…um…dancing?"

Ragh suddenly asks, tilting his head and arching his eyebrow, looking like he’s genuinely curious about the answer I could be willing to give him. Instead of being the adult everyone tells me I am, I push out one hip, place a hand on it and purr, “because I’m sexy.” “I can see that,” Ragh mutters and after a few seconds, breaks out in laughter, holding his stomach as his deep, weird laugh echoes against the walls. When he finally calms down, he straightens up and wipes tears off his cheeks, still chuckling a little, “my apologies, I don’t remember the last time I’ve been entertained like this. Kai sets down an omelette in front of me, looking even hungrier than before. “I would love to see her try,” he says with a wink, then disappearing to the sizzling stove again. Red-faced and mortified, I pick up my knife and fork and dig into my meal. Will I ever get used to their jests?
