In this world (or at least in this region), there was a monetary system based on precious metals, and that copper and silver coins were the main currencies of this people. He needed to know the value of these two coins against each other, he needed to figure out how to do it correctly. First he had to learn the value of copper coins. Not knowing something so basic would be problematic. But not knowing anything about the value of the coins would look suspicious.
