Their lingering filth is making me want to gag. I grab my apple cinnamon body wash and cover my loofu. The water is still cold, but I don't care. I need to be clean now. I scrub my skin mercilessly. I am probably removing the top five layers of skin, but I don't care. I want them off my skin since I can't get them out of my mind.

The cracking was deep and relentless, like the sound of wood splitting under pressure. Pain shot through me so sharply that tears blurred my eyes. My back arched. My nails dug into the soil. My teeth clenched, but I couldn’t hold back the scream that tore from my throat. “Ahhhhhhh!” Another crack. My arms contorted. My dress ripped down the sides, the fabric splitting apart with a hiss. The seams burst as if they were too small to hold me. I tried to breathe, but my lungs were on fire. And then I felt something pushing out from under my skin. My fingers bent, reshaped, and claws slid out where nails had been. My vision sharpened, catching every shadow and flicker of movement.
