That fraction of a second where control did not immediately assert itself. “…shit.” The word came sharper this time. More controlled. More deliberate. His grip on the tablet tightened. Not enough to lose composure. But enough to register tension. This was distraction. And distraction was unacceptable. He locked the screen. The image disappeared. Silence returned. But it wasn’t clean. Something lingered. Not the image itself. But the interruption. The delay. The fact that it had happened at all. He set the tablet down harder than intended. Still controlled.

Maybe I should have sat with my shitty feelings and worked through them, but I always want something to distract me. This is why I need a distraction now. I'm already stuck in my head, overthinking everything , and it is driving me nuts. I hear a phone beep and reach for it on the bedside table. A text from Lily. I shouldn't look, but I can't help it. Lily - What made you leave me? Are you home? Should I come over? My eyes squeeze shut. A distraction. Lily could fill the void, but no. Fuck that. I type and hit send.

I click the message bubble and the conversation opens. It reads: YOU’RE GETTING TOO CLOSE TO STERLING. STAY AWAY FROM HIM! HE’S DANGEROUS!!

Third Person POV At the Smith Group's charity banquet, Jason held Susan's hand and stood under the spotlight, basking in flattery. Suddenly, the screen went black, and a statement appeared on a red background. It was a divorce notice—Charlotte's request to formally sever all ties, issued through her lawyer. Next, a clear ultrasound scan was shown, accompanied by an audio recording. "Take her blood. She's tough, so she won't die from donating some blood." Jason's cold voice echoed through the speakers to every corner of the banquet hall.

But now, I thought he was simply pathetic. "Are you finished?" I asked. "Elena, can we start over?" He grabbed my hand. "I swear, from now on, there will only be you. I've banished Lydia from the pack, and the elder family has been dissolved. No one can obstruct us now!" I pulled my hand away. "Damon, do you think love is a game? That you can end it when you want, and start over when you want?" "That's not true! I mean every word!" he replied.

It reads as a delay but it's actually a positioning problem."

Distraction. “That’s what I need!” I mumbled. I looked outside and saw the darkness engulfing the backyard. I gulped down and got an idea—I could finish it if I started now. My heart keeps pounding loud as I sneak out. I came closer to the main door when I heard someone opening the door upstairs. I hide on the couch and duck my head. “Come out! I can see your shirt, Eliana.” Caleb shouted with irritation. I slowly got up and made a peace sign to him, but he frowned at me instead of smiling. “What are you thinking?” He walked towards me and smirked. “Are you going out now?”
