I hadn’t planned to go—but now I wanted to catch him red-handed. The drive stretched endlessly, every passing second sharpening the tension inside me. My chest ached, my thoughts spiraling as I tried to focus on Noah’s chatter about his new project and company. I even pulled out my phone, scrolling through videos on TikTok, desperate for something to distract me.

Something that would prevent me from beating the hell out of myself. I pour some in a glass and I take a gulp from it. The burning sensation manages to take my mind away from what I’ve done but only for a few seconds. Once the flame in my throat dies down, the fight makes its way back to my mind. I finish the glass in my hand and pour myself more whiskey; I need this. I need this distraction. I don’t want to take drugs now, I don’t want to break my record of being three days clean, so I need to resort to something else.

Slowly, I take one hand off the wheel and reach into my pocket, pulling out my phone. I unlock it with a practiced motion. My thumb hovers over Caleb’s contact for a second. Then I type: Left already. Handle yourself. Three dots appear quickly and a few seconds later, Caleb’s message comes through. Caleb: Are you with him? The i*******m guy? Before I can even think of replying, another one comes through. Caleb: Careful. No distractions, remember? Annoyance flickers through me, quick and sharp as I type rapidly: Fuck off.

Make me want tomake herwant me. I scoff and shake my head, trying to clear my mind of the spider’s web of twisted thoughts. I have other things to focus on right now–like the operations of my biker gang, The Heartless Bastards. But Tammy has imbedded herself in me like a splinter, poking and prodding every time I try to focus on anything else. I’ve never had a woman distract me like thisever,and it’s starting to piss me off.

Dishes to wash. I set the cup down and start running the water. Ten minutes later, I finish cleaning the dishes, the counters are wiped. I need a distraction. I grab my laptop from the bedroom and proceed to the couch, get comfortable, set up coffee on the coffee table and open up my laptop, vowing to focus on work instead of my ridiculous ex-boyfriend and his ridiculous face and his ridiculous laugh and — Nope. Xavier leans closer to me, whispering, “Keep that picture in your mind, imagine you are there, and breathe, Lisha.” I can feel my body getting lighter; it feels like the world is spinning around me; Xavier pulls me against his chest when I lose balance stumbling against him and chuckles as he says, “Open your eyes slowly. I have to get this crush under control, he’s my big brother’s best friend and there is no way, even if I gave in to his flirting – I could entertain having a relationship with him. To distract myself, I get up and head for the other side of the island. I get a pasta pan out and pour the shells into it and add water to the pot then set it on the heat.
