My chest throbbed with anticipation. I had spent weeks imagining this moment. I had pictured the first spark of wolffire in my veins, the first scent of my mate tracing me across the clearing, the thrill of knowing that at last I would belong. My stomach fluttered like a caged bird, part excitement, part anxiety, as I adjusted the ceremonial white robe draped over my shoulders. The elders’ robes shimmered with silver, their embroidered moonstones catching the pale light, reflecting back the importance of the night. Around me, the pack murmured, arranging themselves in a wide circle.

“The three black werewolves, it was a message.” Aria frowned, not understanding. “The time of the terrorists. The three black werewolves. The king and his two eldest sons. One of them is a prisoner now.” The Terrorizers. The ones her father wanted to stop. They were three black werewolfs, always three with one flying at the front and one on each behind him. They were known to cause terror and therefore got the name. Alone, they took many lives and burned villages down to the ground.

I spat. Valkyrie ducked under another swipe, her blade singing as it severed a limb. But there were too many. Too fast. The shadows closed in— Then something massive approached. A deep, earth-shaking howl roared through the battlefield. Heather’s smile faltered. “No,” she whispered. And then they came. A thunderous war cry shattered the air as a wall of warriors stormed down the cliffs, their armor catching the dim light, weapons raised high, ready to tear through the enemy.

A cute voice asked. “Because she is the only female warrior of the Xenakis tribe, she’s the leader’s daughter!” The redheaded girl explained. “Woah!!!” They all exclaimed at the revelation. Apparently, most of them had neither seen nor heard of her before. The redheaded girl nodded in affirmation. “So I heard that Alpha Russe’s charm had made her infatuated with him.” She whispered again. “Eishh! Doesn’t she have her own mate? Or is she the legendary mate-less warrior from our history classes?” The fat boy commented with clear sarcasm in his voice.

“No, you can’t do this.” Commander Raja placed his second left hand on her shoulder. “Give up trying to reason with him, Katie,” he said. “He’s a warmonger. Warriors from old eras are filled with people like him. Something that you, Twenty-First Century folks, wouldn’t understand.” “Twenty-First Century, eh?” Cutler cast his glare at us. “So they’re newcomers.” “Not anymore,” our commander said. “They are now full-fledged braves who managed to go toe-to-toe with your officers.”

A dread older than time crawled through the air, slithering under their skin. Birds screamed, fleeing into the night. The wind howled as if mourning. “She’s here,” Thora choked out, stumbling back. A collective shudder passed through the gathered warriors. The clouds did not simply gather. They circled. Something was coming. Zander was blind to all of it, trapped in a world of his own devastation. He sobbed against Butterfly’s hair, rocking her still form, pleading, bargaining with the gods who had long since abandoned him. “ZANDER!”

The grand war horns of the High Citadel echoed through the jagged peaks, their deep, bronze tones carrying for miles across the snow-capped valley. Beneath a crisp, golden morning sky, the unified vanguard began its march south. It was a sight the continent had not witnessed in a hundred years: thousands of armored Eastern wolf-warriors marching alongside Northern vanguard horsemen, their banners—the Silver Wolf entwined with the Starlight Crown—snapping proudly in the crisp mountain wind.
