Then, slowly, her shoulders began to tremble. Tears slipped down before she even realized she was crying. At first, it was just silent tears, the kind that made your throat ache and your breath hitch. But soon, it grew. A soft sob, then another, until she was crying openly, shaking as though she were trying to cry every ounce of pain out of her system. It shouldn't hurt still, it's been years. Or so she thought. She laughs a little, and it eases my heart. “He’s staying.” I draw her into a hug. “Maya, I’m so happy for you.” She holds me tightly, but then I feel her shoulders shake. “Maya?” She doesn't answer, just cries. Deep, shuddering sobs. These aren’t happy tears. Something’s off. Her shoulders tremble, and her face crumples as she presses her hands to her eyes, but the sobs keep coming—wet and ugly. “What's wrong?”

CARL Jade burst into tears the moment I finished speaking. The loud, choking sobs tore out of her throat and filled the quiet rooftop patio. Her shoulders shook violently as she covered her face with both hands. Tears streamed down her cheeks and soaked into the collar of her clothes and her whole body trembled with the force of the pain I had just dropped on her. I stood there frozen, watching her break down right in front of me. Seeing Jade cry so much made something inside my chest crack open.

"You don't want to piss me off again do you?" Lily gulped audibly and trembled. "No sir, Mackenzie," she whispered fervently. "The last time you ripped my shoulder to shreds and that hurt like a bitch. It hurt so much I even cried. I fucking hate crying. It's such a wimpy thing to do."

That was so intense, I don’t even know what to feel. "Birdie," Saint says a few seconds later, pulling out of me slowly. I finally get the chance to breathe normally when he moves away from me and I take advantage of the extra air to keep crying because I simply can't stop. He lays down beside me and tries to lift my head, but I don't let him. Maybe once I stop crying, "What is it? Does it hurt? I didn't even break the skin that much... it'll be fine." My shoulder throbs a lot, but that's not why I'm crying. I don't even know the reason, to be honest, I just felt too much all of a sudden and I clearly don't know how to deal with something like that.
