The doorbell over the door rang when he entered, and for an instant, he stood still—not uncertain, but due to the strange warmth that rushed up to meet him. It smelled like cardamom tea and old parchment. Music was playing softly in the background—something acoustic, not jarring. Books lined every wall, their spines lovingly lined up by color and genre. A shelf of poetry books sat in the corner, surrounded by dried lavender and hand-painted bookmarks. And behind the counter. she stood there. Lena had just rolled a stack of children's books under the register when she looked up—and they made eye contact. For the first time.

“Do you like it?” “Like it?” I blinked fast, swallowing the lump forming in my throat. “You did this?” She nodded. “I wanted to do something special. I found a YouTube tutorial. I burned one batch of cupcakes but I made another. And these have hearts in them.” Calix raised a brow. “Wait, they have what in them?” “Edible candy hearts. Duh.” He grinned, impressed. “And you did all this by yourself?” “Carla helped me blow the balloons, but I decorated.”

Rachel pointed out. “Yeah. I’m picking this one for mine and Dalton,” Anna went over to the baking station with a strawberry theme. “We're baking a strawberry shortcake. How about you?” “I think I’m going to stick to cupcakes. I didn’t know about the event, so I’m not really prepared. I’m sure there’s a baking cookbook here somewhere.” Rachel searched the stations and thankfully got one. “Right, who would your partner be?” Anna asked. “Partner?” Rachel repeated as she stopped midway from flipping a page on the cookbook.

Me: can’t wait for you to get home Kennedy: on my way I inform our guests Kennedy will be here soon. We place the cupcakes arranged like a cake in the center of the table. Half the cupcakes have pink and the other half have blue centers. The baker placed the cupcakes tightly together, forming a circle. A giant black question mark adorns their white icing tops. I never saw a cupcake-cake until the bakery showed it to me this week. It is perfect. It looks like a cake, but the cupcakes can easily pull apart and consumed.

As he leaned back, something on the shelf behind me caught his eye. “Is that yours?” he asked, pointing at the pale pink notebook with cupcake stickers along the edge. I followed his gaze. “Oh, that? Yeah. It’s kind of dumb.” He reached over and picked it up before I could stop him, flipping through the pages carefully. His expression changed as he read, a slow lift of his brows, a curious narrowing of his eyes. There were handwritten recipes, clumsy diagrams of cake layers, and notes like “try less sugar next time” or “lemon zest makes it pop more.”

I stopped in the stationery department, I'm not even sure why, but I felt like a magnet, being pulled towards the bright, cheerful colours of the notebooks and pens, each with designs of foods dressed up as happy, smiling characters. I flipped through a stack of notebooks until I found one with a cupcake printed on the cover, its cute little grin reminding me of my own Cupcake. I found the matching pen and then discovered there was an entire set that could be made up from rulers, pencil cases and erasers. I may still be seething with anger about our fight, but I also knew that we'd come through this. I wanted to be the reason she smiled, not the cause of her tears.

I’d sit at the window chatting to Caleb on my mobile so he could still see me, but he would never come close. Cupcake girl, yep that’s right. Cupcake girl takes my hand and gently pulls me up. “What’s your favourite drink?” “Erm…I’m ok thank you.” I didn’t want to seem rude but ordering a hot drink is low on my list of priorities right now. “You can’t hide without a drink!” She tuts at me. Oh, was she expecting me to pay to hide? “I’ll have a hot chocolate please?” “And cake…” She added. These cupcake lycans sure knew how to manipulate a situation. I look at the cake shelf only to see a coffee and walnut looking cake with the name I’ll be lycan-ing that. I scowl and turn to lycan cupcake on

All proceeds would go to the church of course. After everyone was gone, I was left alone with the priest and was excited to go into the kitchen of the church to make up a batch of butterfly cupcakes to see what he thought of them. They were a little different with the wings made out of extra cake and the sweet, homemade icing under them and a line of strawberry jelly used for the middle. It took some time for me to make them, but there was nothing else going on and I wanted to make the father another sweet treat for allowing me to stay there.

The next morning, Katherine still couldn't believe that the children made almost fifteen hundred dollars. She checked it over and over in her head. She made them 240 strawberry-filled cupcakes and 240 lemon squares. That's a total of 480 cupcakes, so if they had sold them at $20 per dozen, they should have made $800, not $1480. “Tell me again how you two made so much money?” Katherine asked while she sipped on her camomile tea.

Brie argued. Vivian held up a spoon. “I literally had to scrape icing off the wall. That should count as two extra trays.” “Ten it is,” I said with a tired laugh. It felt good—this messy, stupid chaos. The kind that didn’t hurt. The kind that made you forget everything else for a while. Luna had finally given up and curled beneath the table like a defeated war general. A cupcake sat balanced between her paws, untouched. “I don’t want to eat any of them,” Brie said, looking over the spread. “They’re too pretty. I feel like I’d be destroying art.”
