Chapter 73 Amelie "Ding, Ding, Ding," "Oh, my oven timer!" I snap my head out of my thoughts, turn off my timer, and pull out the spice cake cupcakes from the top oven. I'm in the middle of stress baking. I've been at it for hours. It's challenging to garden right now with my belly; bending over that much kills me. I didn't feel like working in my shop at the moment, and I really wanted some oatmeal raisin cookies, so I went to stress baking. I didn't stop with just oatmeal cookies. I've made snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, blondies, pecan pie, peach cobbler, now spice cake with a vanilla bean cream cheese frosting. MILA'S POV "Are you actually trying to murder me?" Spencer, my desk neighbor and work rival stares at the box on his desk as if it contains live rattlesnakes. Which it really doesn't. The frosting is swirled just right, each one topped with a tiny edible flower I found at the fancy baking supply store in Cambridge.

So weird. I feel a sudden push on my back and I turn to see Jessica standing there, looking radiant and energetic. "Go on! Open it!" she urges me and I nod sheepishly. My eyebrows draw together in contemplation as I lift the lid of the box. My eyes follow the moment and they widen as soon I see what is inside. The cupcakes inside aren't the usual ones. They have some stuff written on them. Each cupcake has an individual word written on it, and when you join the words on all of the cupcakes together, they form a sentence.

I stepped into the hallway once it was almost empty and headed to my locker, trying to look casual even though my heartbeat felt like it was in my throat. I turned the dial — 14, 22, 18 — and the door swung open with a metallic click. And my heart… paused. Because sitting right in the middle of my books was a cupcake. Chocolate base, vanilla frosting, a tiny blue star-shaped sprinkle on top. My favorite. There was a folded note taped to the side. For a moment, I just stared at it. After everything that happened, the cupcake looked so out of place — too sweet, too hopeful — like a tiny apology from the universe.
