They burned like living embers, unblinking, locked directly onto me.
A low growl rolled through the trees, so deep it vibrated inside my chest and made my bones hum. This was no ordinary wolf. It was something far older. Far more dangerous.
The guards released me as if I had burned them.
“Run,” one whispered, terror stripping his voice raw.
“Gods save us all—run!”
Their torches bobbed wildly as they crashed away through the underbrush like frightened deer, footfalls fading into the night and leaving only the thunder of my own heartbeat in my ears.
