He hugged me back tightly, and for an instant the anger I’d been carrying for days dissolved into a bigger fear: the real possibility of losing him.
James cleared his throat, as if hesitant to go on, but did anyway:
“Dante is the one who saved him. He stopped the hunter who was about to shoot at point-blank range. If he hadn’t intervened, Bright wouldn’t be here.”
The words hung in the room, heavy. I looked at Dante, who had just stepped in behind them, his brow furrowed and his arm bandaged. He held my gaze for a second before looking away, uneasy.
My eyes sought Bright’s. I wanted to see gratitude, recognition, something. But his expression stayed hard, almost sealed shut.
