Below the terrace, the lake moved in the darkness, barely, the way breathing moved a chest — just enough to know it was alive.
“I know what this arrangement is,” she said. “I’ve always known. I’m not a child about it.” She looked at me directly. “But I’ll tell you something honest, since we’re apparently spending three days here together.” A pause — “I actually find you attractive. Which is convenient. And I want to make this work — not because I have no choice, but because I’d rather build something real with someone I can stand than spend the next twenty years performing at dinner tables.” She held his gaze. “So. Is there someone else?”
“No,” I said.
