She recognized Panni, then Jinyan, and finally, the armed security chief standing in the doorway.
“Panni! How did you… you shouldn’t be here!” Annie whispered fiercely, immediately placing herself between them and the bed. Her voice was raspy, laced with exhaustion that spoke of months of isolation and constant vigilance.
Panni ignored her. Her gaze was locked on the fragile figure in the bed. Her mother, who the world, and Panni herself, had mourned as peacefully deceased months ago, was alive. Her face was lined and pale, but the slow, shallow rise and fall of her chest was undeniable.
