It's still an odd feeling but I think I’m getting used to it. “How is she?” Athena asks. “She cried herself to sleep watching A Walk to Remember.” I tell her. Rhea sighs. “That’s no good. She dies in the end.” “Yeah, so I’ve heard and apparently the book was worse. I don’t remember seeing her reading it.” Rhea cringes and fidgets nervously. “I may have gifted the audio book to her.” Of course, she did. My sisters are just as bad as me when it comes to spoiling Lilly and Blue. So, if Blue mentioned the book my sister would buy it even if Blue didn’t ask. Just mentioning it would be enough, and clearly that’s what happened here.

The room felt warmer somehow, though neither of us had moved closer. I turned the page. “Fine. No nicknames. Yet.” His shoulders dropped a fraction. Relief. He didn’t want the kind that made him feel human. I lifted the book. “Are you sure you want me to read this? It’s kind of boring.” “I want to hear you.” Something hot coiled in the pit of my stomach. I cleared my throat and focused on the words. I read the first paragraph slowly, letting the cadence settle. My voice filled the room, soft and even, just above the quiet of the storm. Mikhail closed his eyes like he was letting the sound sink into him.

I bent down to fix a few petals that had fallen onto the path. “You still read in here sometimes?” he asked. “Every now and then.” “Still that same book?” I smiled. “You mean the one you said was too long to have a happy ending?” “That’s the one,” he said. “You’ve been reading it for weeks. I’m starting to get jealous.” “Of a book?” He nodded seriously. “It gets more of your attention than I do.” “You could try sitting still for more than five minutes. Then maybe you’d have a chance.”

His voice was low and even and completely present and she lay with her eyes closed and listened to it and let it do what it did. She asked him to read to her in the later hours. The island novel was in her bag. She had finished it the previous night, which she had not told him. He found it and looked at the last page and understood immediately and set it aside and she heard the sound of him reaching into the bag again and the opening of another book, the novel she had packed as a second option, and he found the first page and he read. His reading voice was different from his speaking voice, slightly more open, as though the borrowed language gave him permission to inhabit a register he did n

“Your Dad… your Dad is so cute.” “Ridiculous!” Audrey scoffed. “Do you want me to read this storybook for…?” Rosanne was still speaking as she picked up one of the books. Audrey flinched on seeing her with the book. “Hey, Miss flirt! How dare you meddle with my Miss old-fashioned favorite storybook? Put that down now.” “Oh! Which book would you like?” She dropped the book on the shelf. Audrey snorted. “None. I don't want you. I don't want you to read for me. Likewise, I would rather not see you. Scram.”

People don’t run after me, there are always people who are better and guys don’t really go for someone with brains. “Hey, you have to believe in yourself. Just like how you are my number one fan, that’s how I will be yours too.” “You won’t even read any of my writing.” “That is a lie, I have read all your writings, except the voluminous ones. The ones which are as big as our biology text.” Noah fake shudders like the thought of the length alone was a nightmare. “They are called Novels.” I corked an eyebrow at him. “They take hours to read.” He returned as he uprooted a grass and used it to tickle my face.

I read for eleven nights. We do it at the end of every march, in the open, wherever we have stopped, with three clerks writing and a woman with a good voice repeating each line down the column so the back of it hears. Sela calls it the reading. Within four days the holdings on the road know when we stop, and they come out to it, and by the seventh day there are people walking a day north to meet us so they can hear it and then walking back. It is very boring. Nobody expects that, and I have come to think it is the point. It is an account book. Weights of grain. Counts of hides. Dates.
