But I shook my head, put the truck into gear, and went east. I made it about ten feet before it happened. A deer—a doe—leapt out of the underbrush and darted across the road mere feet in front of the truck. I gasped and slammed on the brakes, tires screeching. The deer froze and stared at the truck. White puffs of air formed around her flaring nostrils.

And like I usually do when she brings up the discussion, I smile and walk away. “Guys, look at what we caught today” one of the guys Devin said excitedly as they dragged in a big deer caught during their hunting trip. “You guys should definitely not drag that thing inside here with all that blood dripping everywhere, leave it by the door and we’ll roast it and have it with a cup of beer”. “That sounds as a good idea” Harry agreed excitedly I felt contended and satisfied to be finally part of a functional family despite not being biologically related.

The mothers scream and but their heads at the snapping jaws. We descend on them like one giant monster. Blood and fur fly as the circle tightens and the wolves devour their way to the center of it.

I saw his knee bending, the hoof lifting: he was stepping into the car’s path. In the instant that I spent waiting for the deer to roll up over the car’s hood and crash through the windshield, I was aware of my body warm in the seat, Tristan’s face lit by the dash, Brooks breathing in the back, the cool sulfur glow of the car’s interior, the salty smell of the burger bag. I have so much more respect for him now. Another flash and he's crouched in some tall grass, watching a deer drinking from a river. As fast as lightning he is upon it, chomping down hard on it's neck! I hear the strangled gurgling of the animal while it's legs flail about until it is no more. Gulp! I never want to be hunted by Tank or by Anyone really!
