Drunk Deer Novels & Stories

Without saying a word, Derrick leads me away from my husband and down a path away from the gardens. We walk together in companionable silence for a few minutes before we come upon a small stream that cuts through the woods. A deer drinking water on the other side of the stream stands up, looking at us with its ears twitching on its head. After a second of staring the deer runs off into the woods.

Nearby, I smelt a forest animal and settled next to Jade who was behind a log hiding. I looked at the form and there was a pine deer grazing. It looked up and around as if sensing us. Jade jumped out first and got it by the neck. It squirmed and bleated for help but with one snap of its neck, it went quiet. Blood dripped from Jade’s mouth as he returned to me with the deer in his mouth. He put it before me and seemed to be gesturing for me to eat it. Never in my life has a dead animal looked so delicious. I let Domino eat it and she offered some to Jade.

I need food. I hop down the two-by-four bridging our platform and the plank and leap over Uncle Dewey. Per usual, he’s sprawled half-in and half-out of the trailer, rear paws dangling over the steps, snout mashed against the door frame. His fur reeks of beer. Sometimes he shifts back to his wolf before he finishes his drink, and he tries to lap the dregs. Then he ends up soaked or with his tongue stuck in the neck of a bottle. “Find anything?” my sister Drona asks from the kitchen table.

I want to help him, but I don't know-how. A few minutes later three guys come dragging six large deer. They drop the deer to the ground, using their claws to skin them, while another guy gets a fire started. My eyes go back to Lucious as he continues to help with the wounded men. The low groans coming from the men fill the dark forest as bones are being snapped back into their rightful place to heal correctly. I look around at all the wounded men, taking in the aftermath destruction of my family's teeth and claws. Many of these guys barely make it out of the fight alive, while many of their friends weren't so lucky.
