Weren’t you just going to confess to me?” I moved aside and avoided his hand before brushing imaginary dust off my sleeve with disgust. “Confess? Who said I was confessing to you?” I rubbed the dog’s head and smiled brightly. “I was confessing to the dog. Look how good it is. It doesn’t lie, doesn’t deceive, and never schemes against me.”

I said, curious what he’d come up with. He beamed. “I know her name, Mama! It’s Fluffypaws McSparkletooth the Brave!” Damien stared at him blankly. “That is not a name. That is a title.” Leo blinked. “But… it’s from Sock Man! He’s a hero!” I bit back a giggle. Damien looked genuinely bewildered, as if Leo had just spoken in code. “Leo,” Damien said slowly, with the patience of a man explaining a stock portfolio to a puppy. “A dog’s name must be concise. One or two syllables. Clear verbal pronunciation for command recognition.”

“We weren’t properly introduced.” Alec chuckled. “I apologize for my manners,” he joked. “Lucky, this is Lana. Drop the leash and shake her hand.” The dog dropped the leash, sat down, and lifted his front leg. Her mouth dropped open as her hand reached out for his paw. “It’s nice to meet such a smart dog.” He snorted. “Don’t let him fool you. He just recognizes small words like ride, walk, sleep, shake, and food.” The dog grumbled as he turned his head to his master.

The oblivious doorman was mentally cursed when he dared say good night, and the poor digital lock almost crashed under his recognized fingerprint. The only one who escaped his rage was Batman. He could never get mad at him. The almost ninety pounds dog woke up to the sound of the opening door and lazily stood to greet his owner. Thankfully, he wasn't the most active dog anymore, because his suit wouldn't survive the stamina from his puppy days. Not that a forty-pound dog could ever be considered a puppy, but still. “Hey Batman, missed me much?” the dog answered with a resounding bark. “Me too, buddy. You know, today was fucking weird”

The dog, if you could even call it that, was enormous. Cerberos had a wide and stout body like that of a pit bull’s, except this body stood at least ten feet tall. The three, fear-invoking heads, rose a few feet higher. Its skin was completely hairless, the dark, leather-like material stretched taut over sinew, muscle, and bone. Teeth as long and sharp as daggers emerged as each of the heads pulled back its ugly black lips in a show of hatred. Each head reminded James of a decomposing Doberman; ears flat back in agitation, black pits for eyes. The middle head barked a low bass-filled roar.

“Special boy.” He walked in like he’d been invited to a garden party and was looking for the cucumber sandwiches. I stood up. Sitting in the secret passage were two giant dogs, like Dobermans but heavier, and about the same height as Biadet. They made no noise, I couldn’t even hear them breathing. They looked a bit bored. Then one yawned and I nearly crapped myself. Its teeth were solid metal.

We both looked at the woman in black when she spoke. "Daniell Jane Cruz." My eyes widened when she mentioned my full name. "Cyrille Bertiz." Cyrille and I looked at each other. "H-how did you know our name?" Cyrille asked tremblingly. The woman did not answer.
