“Come on. We didn’t come this far to back out.”
We followed the tracks deeper into the dunes. The air shimmered with heat. Sweat clung to my skin, the maroon leather already too warm, but I pushed through. The adrenaline steadied my breathing, sharpening my focus.
Then, suddenly, the ground trembled.
Kara froze. “You felt that, right?”
“Yeah.”
Ahead, a shadow moved across the sand, long, wide, serpentine.
“Kara,” I whispered, “move.”
We dove aside just as the ground erupted behind us and a spray of sand shot into the air. A massive, scaled body burst from beneath the surface, a desert wyrm. Its body shinned under the sun and its scales were pale gold and it had molten yellow eyes.
